Pelican Zouaves

Hi one and all

Cab anyone enlighten me as to the uniform of the ACW Pelican Zouaves.
From what I have read on line info appears to point towards them being Wheats Tiger Zouaves. Is this correct?

The name could be related to Louisiana, which has the nickname of the Pelican State.
The bird appears on the state flag.

Could well be. There are more than one zouave outfit from Loisiana so may be a generic term for all of them.

2nd Infantry Regiment [also called Louisiana Zouaves] was formed at Camp Moore in Tangipahoa, Louisiana, during the spring of 1861 Only 3 officers and 41 men surrendered in April, 1865.

If you look at the following site on the Louisiana Tigers:-

You'll find eleven instances of 'pelican'.
One of these refers to the 'Pelican Brigade' ....

'During the subsequent reorganization of Robert E. Lee's army in late May, the much depleted brigade of Tigers was consolidated with the "Pelican Brigade," formally known as the Second Louisiana Brigade, which had also lost its commander, Leroy A. Stafford, a long-time Tiger. Zebulon York became the new commander.'

One often sees them depicted in a brown tunic, as the cheap, poor quality dyes used to run after about five minutes' use.
