I can’t help but wonder if it’s an early example of photography being used as propaganda? The other side of the coin is the recorded looting and execution of civilians by some units at this time. Then again this too could be propaganda... truth really is the first casualty of war.

It was probably for security reasons but it's a bit irritating he's removed his shoulder straps as that would have positively identified his unit but one of the Prussian Guard Dragoons is a possibility.

That also crossed my mind Martin, or perhaps Guard artillery train.
Then that would mean the coloured band of the Kratzchen is wrong but that could be put down as mistake by the whoever colourized the photo. Assuming of course it is colourized and not an actual colour photo.
