Historical Note:
Clad in iron and skins of wild beast , the Polish hussar was one of the most
distinctive soldiers of his days.
As a heavy cavalryman, he participated in many campaigns defending Poland
against invasions and took part to the liberation of Vienna from the Turks
in 1683.
His typical accoutrement consisted of a half plate armour worn over a mail
shirt, a short kontush coat and riding boots. The famous Owing¹ was made of
eagle feathers inserted in a wooden frame covered with red velvet and edged
in brass. The other distinctive sign of the Husaria (Polish Hussar) was the
skin of wild animals (leopard, tiger, lion, wolf or bear) worn over the
armour.
Although the most characteristic weapon of the Hussar was a wooden lance of
4.5 to 5 metres in length, he is represented here with his other weapon, the
Polish-style sabre with a closed hilt.
He wears the typical fur-lined kuczma cap with feathers and holds his
zischägge helmet in the crook of his arm.
