Hi all Planeteers!

I'm quite bored, so here's a silly poll:
In the hypothetical case where a new bust of Nap was released following the actual trend of using celebrities to portray historical characters, which one of the following would you prefer:

1. Rod Steiger

2. Ian "Baggins" Holm

3. Clavier

4.Pierre Mondy

5. WTF....Begging for an Scorsese's biopic!

I guess the best has to be Rod Steiger's version in Waterloo . He may not have been the right shape but he seem to portray the character of Napoleon that would have been vital in making the French Troops fallow him come hell or high water . Ian Holmes played him twice , the first time in 1981 The Time Bandits and again in 2001 The Emperors New Clothes . A clever little film about Napoleon escaping from Elba by replacing himself with a look alike stand in while he slips away and tries to rouse the troops for a new offensive , but the stand in dies of a heart attack and the world is happy to believes Napoleon is dead . So everyone thinks that the real Napoleon is a fraud or suffering from a Napoleon complex . So although Ian played him Twice I'll still go with Rod
chippy

I thought Kenneth Haigh did a decent job at portraying Boney. Not much of a resemble nice but he projected the character well.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rod Steiger a good few years ago, and had a great chat with him.
Thought he made an excellent Napoleon. (Bonaparte that is, not our Napster )

With today's technology in filming, would like to see a remake of Waterloo.

A remake would be good if they got the facts closer to the truth ,but who could play Napoleon after Steiger ,don't know if todays technology would make it any better though , all that computer stuff takes something away ,hence the action movies move so fast so you don't see the flaws .

Ron

How about a movie of some other Nap Battles , Marengo, Austerlitz to name but two .
It's 5.30 in the Morning here and I'm bored to :D at least the suns up ,or in our case the greys up

In my opinion Christian Clavier whas the best i've ever seen.

I think Steiger got the personality right, but then few of the others were given much in the way of emotion to get their acting chops into. I always thought Vladislav Strzhelchik looked the part in the Russian War and Peace film. Clavier was good but didn't lose his rag as much as I think Nap would have been prone to and I also kept having flashbacks of Asterix.
I've read Kubrick's script (Taschen published it) and I think we avoided a stinker. I'm sure it would have looked
fantastic, but in trying to get Napoleon's whole career into a single film it is very sketchy and to my mind over obsessed with Josephine. Dare I also say that I thought the Dialogue was simplistic and very expositional. The plot Jumps all over tha place and relies on a lot of Narration. Even Kubrick said he didn't think he could have got it all into three hours. Maybe Speilberg is the best hope in a Band of Brothers / Pacific mini-series.
Best candidate for a battle - Borodino or Eylau.

i think david cameron should have a go at , after all he will be looking for a new job soon / badger

I just saw a film with Eli Wallachian as Napoleon...a spaghetti Napoleonic called the Adventures of Gerard! He doesn't get my vote.
