I have been using Tamiya Fine White/Gray primer and I am not quite that happy with it. The primer does not always stick to the metal and I also would like some input on a good black primer as well. I have 2 Samurais on the shelf and I believe a black primer would lend itself better to Samurai armour. I would also appreciate a link to a solid internet provider of such primers. TIA
Thanks,
Rocky

Howdy,

I use Floquil Railroad Gray Primer from a bottle that I get from a local (DFW) RR shop. I cut it with lacquer and I can brush or spray it. I'm very satisfied with it. I believe it's also made in a spray can form.

I really don't know if anyone in the hobby industry makes a black primer. You may have to try an automotive spray primer. Look for automotive paint supply dealers in the phone book. They have a number of finely pigmented spray primers in white, gray, and black. You may also find it auto parts stores, just make sure you're not getting the thicker sandable primers - they tend to fill in fine details more than you'd want.

Good luck with your search.

That sounds like the figure might have some mould release on it still or skin oils from handling during cleanup and construction.

As far as primers go I would recommend you try one not packaged for the modelling market and see what you think. Here in the UK and Ireland many of us use automotive primers (both acrylic and cellulose types) and they are very good, extremely strong and much cheaper than things like Tamiya, Gunze or GW primers. In the US some people use automotive primers also as well as Painter's Touch from Rustoleum.

I believe that Citadel's Black Spray is the exact same paint I buy as an automotive acrylic Matt black Spray. I've compared the stuff, and they smell exactly the same.
You'll notice also, that when you brush paint Chaos Black over their Black Spray, its a different shade.

What is more, is that I can pick up a 500ml automotive Matt Black acrylic spray can for £4.59, whereas the Citadel spray can costs £6.00 for only 350ml or 400ml, I cannot remember.

I have black automotive primer gloss and matte. My reason for asking is because I have a 90mm Samurai that I want to start but I really think he needs a good black primer to ensure the proper lacquer finish to the armour.
Thanks to all of you for your input! I love this forum.
