hello Guys,

I need some help. For the figure i'm painting at the moment i find it very hard to shade and highlight Marsbrown.
With white as usual the color is flat to a greyish what i don't like. Shading is possible with burnt or raw umber. I find it a very hard transition.
The great difficulty is highlighting the Marsbrown...
Any help is welcome.
BTW: i paint in oils...

I've had the same problem with other browns too. Addin' yellow or white for highlights will jus' turn 'em a horrible grey colour. Instead I use Cadmium Yellow Hue or Raw Sienna, there has to be a higher ratio mix of these two colours than brown. Somethin' like 70/ 30 mix of Cad' yellow or Raw Sienna to brown, respectively. This works for me.

Hi Marc
I also work in oils and use a lot of a colour called"Naples yellow hue" for highlighting
Its a shade of cream and not being as harsh as white blends a lot better without losing your brown colour
I always say if you are going to buy one tube of oil paint, buy "Naples yellow hue"!!
I also use it on blacks and blues and would not be without it
Hope this helps
Cheers
John

Hi Marc

When I use Marsbrown.. I use a Cad. Red to highlight. If you
have it.. try Cad. Red. Med. not the light.. as thats too orange.
Or maybe you will like that.

I just did the tops of my Grenidier boots.. MarsBrown and I
used Cad. Red to just edge the sides and then lightly brushed
the very front of the .. I call it the cuff .. of the boot.

Maybe this will help and you will like the results.

Thanks Dee,
gonna try it also. You all give me some real good advice. So i've have now some colors on a piece of plastic sheet to try.
The results are gonna be seen i a few weeks.
Again, thanks Dee.

Try adding a little yellow or yellow earth in addition to the white.

You may also like to try yellow + a small amount of red, since Mars Brown is actually a dark, dull orange.
