Hello everybody.
I’m making Prussian musketeer of Seven Years War, and get confused with his ammunition. Some pictures showing bayonet scabbard, some don’t. What should I do? Please help.

Well, that's remains a secret :( . But may be someone can help me with cartridge-box sizes, please. :)

Ernst, What is interesting is that Prussian infantry of the Franco Prussian war did not have bayonet scabbards either. I can only think that the bayonets were kept fixed to the muskets or would be stored in a knapsack or possibly there were bayonet scabbards built into an infantryman's hanger (sword) scabbard as I have seen with scabbards of later periods. As for the size of the cartridge box, look at artwork done of the period if you do not have proper measurements of period equipment and compare it to the figure wearing it.~Gary

Thank you Gary :) . For now I've decided to make it next to hanger, as it shown on rare illustrations, and it was in contemporary armies, unless I'll get an exact information. As for cartridge-box size, it's different on various illustrations :( .

Ernst,

Looking through Osprey's "Frederick The Great's Army 2 Infantry" I noticed NO
bayonet scabbards worn by Prussian soldiers on any illustrations. Be careful by adding it next to the "hanger" unless you have reliable reference. The bayonets are very short and were more than likely fixed all the time. I'm not an expert on the Prussian Army during the Seven Years War but I've never seen an illustration/painting depicting them without bayonets fixed. This practice, as Gary mentioned, was followed thru to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.

As far as the cartridge box, they were very large. I would guess twice the size the Napoleonic era Prussian boxes.

Keep us posted on your project.

Jason

Thank you, Jason.
The riddle is solved  . Bayonet scabbard was fastened to a waist belt directly above a sabre in a vertical position, that's why it is not visible under uniform :) . Now it's cartridge box turn.
