Are the values read across or up and down? Also what does the graying color do at the bottom right ?

"Greying down" a color refers to reducing the color's chroma. It is accomplished by mixing in the complimentary color (the color opposite on the color wheel). Ex Mixing a touch of green into red will lower the chromatic value of the red. Theoretically, if you mixed equal parts red and green or blue and orange, you would get grey. Make sense?

Please restate your question on are values read across or up and down. When I use this book for making skin tones, I mix up all nine values, apply as W.F.Powell shows on one of the first pages, then blend. I really like how the North American Indian skin tones turned out.
