I wanted to try painting a flat so I picked this up at the expo. It is beautiful and beyond my capabilities right now, but I had a question. My local guys say the male figure is not of the civil war era, and I thought maybe he is, Can someone guide me the right way?

Thanks

Brad, Your buddies are right it's not a Civil War flat. I would say it's a Franco Prussian war period subject.~Gary

Looks Franco-Prussian war to me too, although I'm no expert on the period.

It's a nice flat, certainly a painting challenge!

Brad,

Nice flat! Your soldier, judging from cap, could be one of Prussia's allies from Wurttemberg.

Check out Osprey's "German Armies 1870-71 (2)" It has a nice color plate of a Wurttemberg soldier.

Everyone - Thanks!

Good thing I didnt paint it civil war. Franco-Prussian it is. I knew I could get the correct answer here. Even though it is beyond my skills right now, the scene just grabbed me and had to have it.
