Question on HM magazine figure

Good morning all,

For those of you who have received this month's Historical Miniature magazine (#55. July/Aug/Sept, 2006)....

On page 29, the King's musketeer bust has similar sleeves that my ECW Royalist Officer has.

What is that outter covering of material and what is its function?

Is that thin metal or, more likely, silver brocade or something else?

It is metallic lace trim that was sometimes used to decorate sleeves during this time period.

Dave and I have been discussing it as well. I assume it is sewn onto a leather jacket of some kind or is it part of the buff coat?
