Hi,

Does anybody have any experience or links to reviews with either the 8500/8900 precision imitation sables or 8400 series? Looking to upgrade for fine detail/faces in 35th scale on a very tight budget and these are cropping up at a nice price. I prefer a more classic teardrop shape and shorter bristles rather than straight longs, so recommendations for brushes under 4 europounds would be great as well.

TIA

Kimmo

Cheers Marc and Nap.

I used them once.....on a metal figure they where gone after two figures.
But with acrylic, maybe they stay longer.

Marc

Marc, were they the imitations or the sables?

Nap,

I had forgotten about that thread, but doesn't quite answer my question(s). The usual suspects in terms of go to brushes keep getting mentioned, but they are all out of my price range for the moment. I will be investing in a bunch of different brushes as soon as possible to try and find my forever brand(s). For now, I need to find something better than decent, my points are all wearing down and it is getting a tad frustrating to work with them. I can get 2 of the above mentioned Raphaëls for the price of one WN 7 and still save a bit.

I have very little in the way of comparison but I have springer brushes that I'm quite content with. I bought one each of sizes 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3 and spent just over 20 EUR.

Hi Kimmo

You might like to also look at Rosemary and Co series 33 and 22 ....both Kolinsky and very good prices and quality

Nap

The 22s look right up my alley, but out of my range for now. With shipping I'd end up paying the same as a WN. By a strange twist of fortune, my nearest hobby shop carries WN at a very reasonable price. Usually they're fairly pricey over this way and not carried by anyone else close by.

Cheers,

I keep seeing these everywhere, but the sables are all longer bristle as far as I can tell, unless you go up to #2-3, then they get a bit too big overall for my needs right now. The price is certainly more than reasonable if they stay in decent shape. I'll have to grab some of the bigger ones later for general purpose stuff.

Cheers Felix! A shame I can't see the photos (not loading or gone to internet heaven), but it looks like the 8404 is what I'm after if I read that right. And the 8400 sounds like a good alternative.

Cheers Felix!

And Marc, I guess they were the sables and not the imitation then ;)

Hi Kimmo
If you're in the UK try Rosemary and Co (as Nap suggests) I've been using them for about 12 months now and they've held up very well . They're my 'go to' for general stuff and then I use No7's and Broken Toad (old style) for the very fine detail. I can accomplish most things with the R&Co ones though.
Not sure what you mean by the brushes getting too big overall? I tend to do everything with a size 1 brush, although I do primarily work in 54mm. Dependent on your budget I'd forgo buying the next figure and buy a couple of Rosemary& Co brushes and then choose a single No7 with a good point (All brushes can vary slightly in this respect) and pick up a tub of brush soap to use regularly if you haven't got any. (y)
Have fun

Hi Kimmo

If you mean his reply to me, he commented that Springer brushes only have a barrel shape once their size gets too big for him. Sizes 1 and below are pretty much straight.

DaddyO, getting really good brushes is on the great list of stuffs, problem is, there's never enough extra cash to cross things off that list, and I need a couple of new ones somewhat urgently. Funny you mention soap, I just linked a video on cleaning and maintaining https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/brush-maintenace.212205/#post-1039802 I'll see if these tips bring back some life to what were my "better" brushes.

Elgreco,

I have a #2 in the Nova series I got for a song from a shop going out of business. I loved it when it was new, but after a few sessions it refused to reshape at all. I will admit I could be a little better with cleaning, but I have never had a brush go that bad that quick. I'm trying to move on from synthetics for my figure work, although I am curious to see how the Precision Series behave compared to the other synthetics I've used. I know synthetics keep getting better and better as time goes by, but I've gotten to the stage as a figure painter where I can tell that they don't quite do what I want them to do.
