Hi guys. Im just about to start Andreas mounted Winged Hussar and have a few questions. Are there any good resources online or in book form that would assist me in painting this figure. Here are a few of the questions im looking to answer through research. If you guys have any of the answers or if you can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it.

Are there any particular type or color of horse used by the Hussars?

Any particular color for the clothing worn under the armor and the saddle clothes? Ive noticed in the little bit of research ive done so far that crimson or red seems predominant.

What color were the feathers? What kind of bird did these come from?

Do i have to show the figure depicted with the flag on the lance or can the lance be bare?

Any designs on the shield or were they of solid color? If so, what colors would be appropriate?

David--Osprey is ok for this subject but the ultimate resource on the subject is titled, "Husaria, The Winged Horsemen", by Anna Wasilkowska, Wydawnictwo Interpress, ISBN 83-223-2682-3. The book contains color photos of actual Hussar artifacts from Poland and around the world and shows a variety of armor and helmet styles as well as swords, sabers, maces, pistols, carbines, and lances used by the Hussars. It also contains color reproductions of original paintings showing the Hussars and painted from life. It ain't cheap, being published in Poland, but the text is in Polish and English and it is a quite complete work. It may be available on line as reference but I bought my copy from The Military Bookman in New Jersey. Hope this helps--

As far as the colour, not really judging from period illustrations.

Crimson was indeed the favoured colour of the Polish nobility (from before this date too incidentally). The classic colour combination was crimson tunic, deep blue trousers, yellow boots.

Eagle feathers (golden eagle?) are most common - mottled/banded, fawn and brown - but raven feathers - black - are also seen. I've read that other types were also used, including vulture and crane, but I don't know if this is accurate or what colour the vulture feathers would be naturally; crane feathers might have been dyed blue, red or green.
