Hello guys, dont know if many of you remeber me, i certainley remeber some of the talent you guys had around here. Well im back to the hobby after a break, i felt i needed the break as i felt that my models were just not upto the standard that warented me continuing with the hobby, well i thought that a hobby should be fun, and if i have a decent looking figure at the end, well then that should be a plus.

So i should be posting regularly now, with my current project which is the Verlinden French Napoleonic Foot Guard Artillery Officer Bust, a real beauty, and has incredible detail.

Ill post later this week when i start laying in some colour.

Cheers all, heres to a longer stay this time! :)

Olly, I remember you, welcome back. Though looking at the work of others can be discouraging at times try not to let this affect you to the point where you set aside your hobby. Personally for me awards and titles in this hobby do nothing to me, and do not help me in my goal to make each project better than the last. I only compete against myself. The learning and the sharing is the most rewarding part, what matters most is that you enjoy what you're doing.~Gary

I remember you too Olly. Glad that you are back.

As Gary said, comparing yourself to others can be a challenge. When I get down on how I feel about what I have done compared to others, I try to let it motivate me to ask questions. I also get alot of pure pleasure out of seeing some of the beautiful work.

You can always put down one figure that you feel is not progressing well. Take a small-er break by working on another piece.

Welcome back, Oliver. No matter where your skills are, I think it's important to remember that we all come to this hobby with different needs and expectations. As long as your time spent painting is enjoyable, nothing else matters.

Welcome back! I took about 3 years off in the 90's and I know it can be tough to get back to modleing and painting after a long break.

My advice is: Take your time, don't beat yourself up if you do not return to your old form immediately and, as Steve says, HAVE FUN!!

Look forward to seeing your work on the Planet!

Happy Painting!

Cheers all, should be able to post pics of the bust that ive finsihed cleaning up very soon. Maybe worth asking for a V bench if its not too much trouble? ;)

hi oliver ive been in the hobby for just over a year and like you i got very dispondent with some of the figures that i was knocking out
after a visit to Norman Otteys a well known figure painter he told me do a bit leave a lot so instead of knocking a figure out in a couple of days it now takes weeks and weeks and i have a few on the go as well so i now never get down or bored as well
and now i have read some of these guys bits and bobs and hey light at the end of the tunnel mate

Years ago Paul I used to knock out a figure a day............now its a figure a month if I'm lucky and the quality has sure improved. I have about a dozen figures in progress and as I get bored with one.....swing over to another and eventually come back to the one I was bored with and have a different outlook towards it.

G,day fellas, Im 57 been doing figs for over half my life also graphite art work and I still fall off the trucK... but when some thing dose come good its a great feeling.. I,ve been competitive in many things won & lost its the talk and beer after is what its all about ........ enjoy it all PHIL

Hi Olly

I have tried all the areas of this hobby, plus lots of other competitive and non-competitive things, all with varying results, and keep coming back to figures. Like Phil W, I agree that in most things I've found it's the comradeship and the support that is perhaps (for me anyway) the biggest buzz.

Welcome back, and remember, do it 'cos you want to, not because you feel you have to!

Phil M

Hey Olly welcome back to figures...as the others have said, just as long as you're enjoying what you're doing, thats the main thing at the moment...the friends that you make along the way will add to the overall experience. Not to mention all the great advice and inspiration you can find right here on this site.

And Phil....figures rock... (y) how you doing my old friend...??...good to see you on the planet too.

All the best.

Roy.
