IN MEMORAM RENE CHARTRAND
This great scholar, simple and naturally distinguished, possessed as much humor as knowledge was a wonderful touch-to-everything, in all the nobility of the term. Chief Conservator of Canadian National Parks and Adjacent Historic Sites for more than 30 years, René Chartrand left an indelible mark on what we would call an enticing, visual educational style.
Prolific author of so many books and articles among other things about what was called the New France, editor-in-chief of the bulletin the American "Company of Military Historians", etc. , if René is best known and recognized for his publications related to the military history of Canada, especially that of Quebec, he still had a personal passion for the military history of Spanish and Portuguese "colonies", of life in the Caribbean, buccaneers and other pirates in the 18th century, etc. , which we know less, we French.
As for New France and Louisiana, this authentic scholar could tell you about military life in the forts, militias, fabrics, weapons, crafts without ever getting tired or bored. His research and publications over 50 years have led to major advancements in the knowledge of military and civilian life in Canada in the 18th century and in those exotic horizons that will always make us dream. To talk about it only...
It's a great gentleman who has left us like this. We will all miss him and even more so in historical research.
Whoever writes here has had the privilege of collaborating many times with this exceptional man and loses a very dear friend.
Fortunately, we still have his many works...
