I have a deep fascination of old photographs (not only for research, but also for the privilege of looking back in time). One caught my eye the other day - Roger Fenton (one of the very first war photographers and the creator of iconic images from the Crimean War).
Its a simple self portrait, yet it reveals one little insight into the process of photography back then. I have know idea if he had an assistant replacing the lens cover on the photographic equipment, or if he ducked out of the frame when the exposure was done and did it himself, but if you look closely at the book in his hands his pocket watch is placed on top and the case is open - he was timing the shot.
I love finding these clues...
If its not his watch, it may be his spectacles - I may be fooling myself!
