Hi all

Here is my latest work in progress on an older 54mm Roman legionary from Pegaso.

Actually the figure is nearly finished I just need to weather it but that will be done once I start painting the groundwork, which, as you can see, is still pretty much in its conception phase.

Colourwise I stayed away from the traditional reds and whites for the cloak and tunic and choose more natural, but gloomy colours. Given the fact that this legionary is depicted in winter dress I thought that to be more appropriate. For that same reason the skintone was kept rather pinkish too.

I hope you like my efforts so far but constructive comments are welcome.

Here are the pics…

Johan,
Saw this one last thuesday on our clubevening and I was knockout of my chair.
Perfect paintwork all around. Like the greentone on the cape and most of all the very unusual color of the "khaki".
Great work, and when you finished the base I believe you have a showstopper.

All and everyone many thanks for these generous comments!

@ Ed: Here are the colours I used for the clothing:
1) Cloak: undercoat with Vallejo's English uniform and then sepia for the base shaded with ivory black and highlighted with yellow ochre and Naples yellow.
2) Short-sleeved tunic: undercoat with Vallejo's pale sand; a base with raw umber shaded with sepia and highlighted with yellow ochre, Naples yellow and very little titanium white for the extremes.
3) Long-sleeved tunic: undercoat with Vallejo's pale sand after which a base colour was mixed with chromium oxide green, raw umber and titanium white. This was shaded by adding more raw umber and highlighted with more titanium white.
4) Trousers: Vallejo's bronze green as undercoat; base mix with chromium oxide green and raw umber; shading with more raw umber and a pinch of ivory black; highlighting with yellow ochre added progressively.

@ David: I guess the above summes it up ;) , everything in oils over acrylics.

@ Keith: The dress calls for an autumn or wintery scene indeed, but there will be no snow involved.

Cheers

Johan

Hi,
good work and well done.
Only a question : what's the white material that you've used for the groundwork?
Cheers

... and thanks for the Palette...(y)

You're welcome Rodrigo!

Hi Anthony. I'm glad you like the shield but believe me or not but the part on which I've spent most time and effort was the face. Such a confined space it was and I had to strip it several times before I was more or less satisfied! On top of that my eyes aren't getting any younger
