This is a brief review of a bust of a Roman Legionary designed by Atlas by printed and marketed by El Greco under licence.
As I’ve said before normally I find painting figures I bit of a chore. I do it …..but much prefer the modelling. However as I’m thoroughly enjoying painting my present project I thought I’d get this simply to paint with no construction or converting in mind.
This particular bust is one of a range of figures/scales available. I went for the 1/6 scale version.
A few thoughts in no particular order:
:apart from needing a light scrub with warm soapy water is ready for undercoating.
:it’s a one piece print with no construction required
:it is printed and finished to a very high standard with no visible print lines or no evidence of where the print supports were attached
: 3d printed figures take some getting use to. They’re very light and feel “plasticy”. I personally don’t mind but I’ve read on PF that it puts some people off…….it shouldn’t because this promises to paint up as good as anything else.
:the eyes are sculpted with hollows where the pupil should be as in classical sculpture. I think I will put a dab of filler in these, to make painting easier
: the detail is superb and sharp. Some people might say the detail is a little heavy but as someone who doesn’t have a steady hand when painting this suits me to the ground.
: great texture on the tunic etc.
: great undercuts under the armour on the shoulders and there is a clear gap between the side of the face and the cheek pieces of the helmet.
: I bought the option stand which I think will set the bust of perfectly. However the stand come with a square locating plug at the top but this is no where to fit this on the bottom of the bust . However most modellers would find it within their ability to cut a small hole in the bottom of the bust to fit.
: the bust arrived in a stout cardboard box filled with polystyrene packaging.
All in all a great bust and I’m really forward to painting it.
Highly recommended!
You know that with El Greco you going to get a quality product and great service ..and this was no different .
I’m afraid my photography doesn’t do the subject any favours, but see El Greco’s own website for better pictures of the entire range.
