Hi all. I'm having a bit of a mental block right now and can't seem to put together the right mix for painting rope. It's for the Young Templar Knight's cloak. I use oils and Vallejo acrylics as a medium.

Thanks,

Gary

Rope back then was probably made from hemp fibre which is similar in colouring to raw linen.

Although there are dozens of ways you might mix this sort of colour Raw Umber makes a good base. Highlighting just with white can work, but you might find you need to add in a touch of Yellow Ochre or something similar.

New hemp rope is very light, like a vallejo GC34, it darkens with age considerably, through khaki/desert yellow (GC61/GC63) to eventually becoming more of a dark brown (but this is very old. This is from obervations of the hemp ropes on our old fishing boat!

Gary,

Give this a try... all Vallejo acrylics:

Base- 914 Green Ochre + 921 English Uniform + 941 Burnt Umber
Highlights- Base + 951 white
Shadow- 941 Burnt Umber

Ratios are by eye. Hope this helps.

Cheers
