Hi to one and all ,

You all know that this great hobby also has many other benefits the least not being friendships that are made , this has happened to me , through modelling I have made a great and now long suffering mate called Jim Evans (Jimbo on here) .

Now James likes to push the putty around ...sometimes for Campaign Miniatures which we both started (more news on that will be coming soon) and "sometimes " for me .

Its my pleasure to post some WIP pictures of a sculpt he is doing for me , using one of Campaign minitures busts as a basic starting point he is sculpting Sgt Major Edwards ...a Crimean veteran and a much loved soldier by the Royal princes who he schooled .

In 1852 Sgt-Major Edwards was appointed by the Queen to act as drill instructor to the Prince of Wales, aged 11 and Prince Alfred aged 8. When he left for the Crimea, they presented him with the cane he carries in the photo. After the war the Guards made a triumphal march back to Buckingham Palace on 9th July 1856. Flowers were thrown at them and the soldiers attached them to their fixed bayonets. Sergeant-major Edwards marched at the front of the regiment carrying a bouquet of roses.
In this photograph by Cundall, Sergeant-Major Edwards of the 1st Battalion Scots Fusilier Guards is wearing his new tunic. This is the first pattern which lasted a year. The same man can be seen, without his beard, in the second pattern tunic at Sergeant-Major and Drill Sergeant 1862. The heavily embroidered and padded coat-of-arms badge is superimposed on four gold chevrons on each arm. His collar and cuffs are also well covered with gold lace. The blue shoulder straps are not easily visible but he would have a silver star badge on them. His collar hidden by his beard has a silver embroidered thistle badge similar that that worn by officers.
His sword is hung from a waistbelt and seems to be pulling it down too much. Later tunics would have a hidden hook sewn into the material to support the belt under his left arm. His crimson sash is now over his right shoulder instead of round the waist. The three medals are the Crimea Medal with four clasps, flanked by the Turkish Crimea medal and the French Medal Militaire. He also has white gloves and a cane of office.

I am really chuffed he is doing this for me , a great chance to get the NMM out on the rank badges ..and look at that hair style ...brillant ..............

For me Sgt Major Edwards epitomises the Victorian Soldier .

I am sure James would welcome any constructive comments .

View attachment 93777 Hi Guys ,

Just a quick post with another picture of the man himself this time without the facial hair , he is seen with a drill sgt and now hs an additional medal.

The man on the right is Sergeant-Major Edwards in 1856. Here, he is without his beard, and in the single-breasted tunic that replaced the first pattern. His ranks badges are still the same and he has large cuff flaps to accommodate the extra gold lace that surrounds the three buttons. There is also a double row of gold lace around the top of the blue cuff. His collar is well covered with gold lace and has a silver thistle badge embroidered on it. The drill sergeant on the left has a star badge on his gold collar and no lace around the cuff flap. They both have white leather waist-belts with swords attached.

Hi Kev,
I see youve finally got your Sgt Major bust! Looks great, full of character, as you say, the epitome of Victorian soldiery!
Is it likely to become commercial?
cheers,
Steve(y)

Hi Guys ,

Steve ,
You are indeed correct I have finally got it and I am really happy ..will it be commercial ...a lot depends on casting potential and the responses and feedback but at the moment its a oneoff .

Martin ,
Thanks for the link a most interesing soldier and what a GSM/RSM should be like , the picture of the new badge was infact one we were using ..replacing the current Royal Arms with Victoria's ...I think Jimbo is cursing me at the moment !!!

Its a cracking bust Kev. Top marks to Jimbo for creating it. I think this will sell like hot cakes if made commercial. The photos are great and I am glad to see the arms got filled out in the end. Always nice to see a bit more of Jimbos garden too.

Great looking subject kev, Jim has done well with this one.

Looking at the bust the busts left elbow could do with more definition, it seems too rounded and this puts the upper arm and lower arm out of proportional length, just needs elbow dropping and cornering off more to produce more of an angle.

All the best

Steve

Great figure. I think Mil-Art or a similar company produced a 90mm version many years ago. I prefer the single breasted, clean shaven version, but it's a great choice of subject either way.

Hi Guys ,
Well I have finally wrestled this from Jim's hands ..and what a great job he has made , this is now leaping to the front of my painting line along with the Verlinden Aquilifer I am doing .

The detail and work that Jim has put in is so much appreciated ...I have a few comments though mate

I hope the clasps on the medals are in the correct order and ...........you mispelt on the royal arms ...............

Oh and by the way I have some great idea's in my head for others ....what do you mean you are moving !!!!!! .

I will post primed pics once it has dried !!!!!
