Hi Marc,

You can try mixing in the tiniest spot of Burnt Sienna (or Umber) as these are essentially dark oranges.

Or maybe just add a little bit of a darker blue like Ultramarine, but as Cerulean leans a little towards green then maybe Pthalo or Prussian blue might produce better results.

Edit: another option maybe a little Blue-Black (W&N) if you have it (I love this paint by the way, its one of my most used colours ;))

Good suggestions for shading Cerulean Blue. How about highlighting? I have always had problems with Cerulean and Ti-white just doesn't seem to cut it.

I prefer to use Prussian blue + Titanium white
darker : prussian blue
lighter : white

thanks again.
I'll tryed Prussian blue. But never got the right color for my taste.
Looking at artist (painting on canvas) they all paint skyblue with Cerulean blue.
At some fabrication sites they all called Cerulean blue sky blue.
So I made the choice for CB.
Looks almost simulair as the coat.

Can somebody help me on the right shading color (oils).
Orange is the complementary color off blue but it just don't look right.

Marc

Marc,
The Powell book has these recipes:

Sky: 6 white, 1 cerulean blue, 1 cobalt Blue, 1 violet.
Shadow: 3 White, 5 Ivory black, 3cobalt Violet, 1 alzarin Crimson.

Hope this might help you.
Cheers
John

I would have to agree that you add a tiny bit of cobalt blue for darker shades. here is a comparison of two oil paint brands and how they lighten (half way down the page) https://artrelatedblog.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/blue-ridge-paint-review/

I would suggest to stay in a saturation mode with the color than to add complimentary colors. If you don't like the look then slowly and with only a dot paint added to your mix add in the complimentary color.

Orange will be the complimentary color and can be added to get you to a darker shade but is more like a brownish grey. Burnt sienna will push it more to a brown.

I hope this helps.

My choice these days for sky blue is paint from the American firm Vasari based in New York .

Video blue shaded with shale , highlight with Tit white. the Shale darkens the blue without changing the hue.
You may not be familiar with these oil paints Marc but they are quite special albeit a wee bit pricey .
The Shale pigment is only really used as a tint and works with other pigments also .

On a footnote : it will get damned close to Mirsofts lady in blue coat :)

Thanks John, great help.
If I may ask. What is the Powell book??
Marc
Marc,
The book that I have is called, 1500 Color Mixing Recipes for oil, acrylic, and Watercolour. By William F Powell. I believe that it is three smaller books in one volume. It has landscape colours, skintone colours sections.
I find it useful every once in a while and also Connie schulte's mixes on a DVD/CD.
Cheers
John
