cheers ralph, it was a close thing but i am glad i got there in the end. i realised in time what a great set of people i was going to miss if i gave in.
i am now back in the painting frame of mind again so hopefully will be posting more work soon.

Nice to see you again today Tony.
No, don't give up mate, you're definitely making progress. If I can give you some advice, concentrate on one area at a time to improve on. For example, think about adding some more contrast to your flesh tones on your next figure. Work on deepening the shadows and adding a bit more highlight, get that where your happy and then move on to the next thing, it'll soon come together.
Ask here as you go along for critique and advice and you'll soon get to where you want to be. Most importantly enjoy it, it doesn't have to be a competition or something to get stressed about, it's a hobby to enjoy and not take too seriously.
(I think I can guess what happened to Hakeswill's shako peak )

Nice painting Tony, don't give up. (what happened to the peak on the Sgts shako)

hi bob, thanks for the comments, i think roger has already guessed what happened to the peak, my display cabinet decided to collapse in the middle of the night a short while ago and i think that the peak is somewhere in the debris and i had missed that it was missing. luckily that is only the second bit of damage that has been done and i will attempt to sculpt a new peak.
cheers
