I thought I'd ask those in the know what approach would ensure the best results for a somewhat novice who wants to add a slight beard/facial growth to a Hornet bare head which does not feature this molded on already. Would I be better off simulating this in the painting process with a deeper 5-o'clock like shadow or with some other medium applied first like the Gunze Mr. Surfacer or Duro? Thanks in advance for any insights. Regards, MK (gonna take the plunge into the more advanced stuff.....)

Michael, try sculpting the beard on the head with a little bit of modelling putty (e.g. Magic sculpt or Aves 2-part epoxy putty). It'll help to give the "facial growth" some body, plus it's always easier to paint something that's already there. HTH. Cheers !

Mi Michael, well at 1/35 scale you can get away with painting certain details but if you want to show, say, a week's growth then I'd probably add real texture myself, even if only on the chin, upper lip and the cleft under the bottom lip where hair growth can be faster.

I might do this by stippling thick paint on, this gives quite a good representation and is easy to control, especially in oils. Or you could 'paint' it on with a slurry of putty in much the same way - just add a drop of water to a little freshly-mixed putty and wait a few minutes for it to be absorbed - I've used this method once or twice on my sculpted heads for shaved areas that are growing out.

If you use paint I would do this over the primer and then undercoat the area in the skin basecoat, it's probably best not to try to do this directly with the beard colour. For putty I would do it on the metal/resin and then prime over it but you can make this kind of addition over primer without problems if you've primed already.

Hi Michael...great advice from both Kenneth and Einion...I especially like the slurry of putty idea from Einion which I've used a few times at this scale and works well for some very delicate results....as an alternative...if you take as long as I do to complete a figure...you might find that he grows a beard all on his own.... :)

Good luck and lets us know how you get on.

Roy.
