What the hell is distemper paint???????
Did a quick Google. Go to Wikepedia.
Everyone here should. Now we have a 'clue' to the Russian painting techniques.

How many hours? Probably not as many as the average painter. Distemper paint dries quickly ( unlike oils ) and covers in ONE stroke. If you are a classically trained artist as many of the Russian painters are you already know where you are going and how to get there. And what is being offered here is the ornate, not the drama ( lack of shadow/highlight ). Typical with many Russian painters the face is painted almost as an afterthought.

Very good point!

Yea, if the skin was done "properly" this piece would be better. Other than that, the one thing that many people will find attractive about this is the bright colours.

Historically there is no reference that Saladin dressed like a peacock.

:D good point. This "heraldy" looks like "ok, lets put a pattern on everything". less is sometimes more. but i also have to say that i wish i could paint the heraldy like that...

It would be quite nice if the Russian Federation would respond to their own thread and give some feedback to the members comments, but I have not seen any evidence of this on their previous 5 posts:confused:Tommi

Tommi, they never respond. I think it's policy!
But here's the story and it's true.
This hobby gained popularity in the 60s in U.K., U.S.A. and France. Those that became 'addicted' were amateur historians or history buffs. None ( or very, very few ) were professional, classically trained artists. Many had natural talents that they polished to a high degree ( the early 'Masters' ) and by the 80s some took courses in Art. Even today the vast majority in the hobby are journeymen.
Meanwhile a phenomena was developing in the New Russia. Students highly trained in classical art ( in particular the St. Petersburg area ) found themselves doing restoration work for a government that could barely pay them. A Russian genius realized a market for those skills never considered before in Russia. A market that thrived outside it's borders. And the money was superior to government pay.
All of us remember how our mouths dropped open in wonder when these painted figures hit the market...
Many of us thought they used decals (lol) others thought they labored for years on each piece. In reality it is the work of highly trained professionals using a medium not commonly used ( distemper paint ) by those outside Eastern Europe. It dries quickly and coverage is superb. There is now a question of how light-fast or durable this medium is.
Time will tell.

I think they are just using the planet as a means to increase sales with no original intent to share anything about techniques. Many collectors I know visit the planet daily and that was their hope......reaching these collectors.

Nevertheless,
I still like what they do. I hope that i can paint the half of these Russian.
We also have a lady out of St Petersburg in our club. See can also paint like these. We asked her many time's how they do it, but never got an answer.
So guys, give up asking for how to's , they don't do it.

Marc

I agree.....and since it's strictly a commercial venture on their part I really don't consider them part of the community.

Well put! You, Guy and Tommi hit the nail on the head! They would have a much better chance of selling this on E-Bay, like the person that is trying to sell Francois Verlinden's pieces in stratospheric $$$ range!
