Pegaso just released a new bust in their "Bust Series" sculpted by the talented hands of Carl Reid. The bust is cast in 1/9th scale resin and depicts a Native American Sioux Warrior.

Sioux 05.JPG

The kit arrived in Pegaso's sturdy cardboard box with the box art paining photos on the outside. The parts were sealed in two clear plastic bags.

The above top photo shows the main parts with the feathers added in the middle photo. The bottom photo shows the detail of the feathers. Some of the best cast feathers I have seen.

Above you see the four sides of the bust itself showing the immense detail Carl has sculpted into this Sioux Warrior.

Above top are the two resin cast horns to fit in each side of the headress.

Above are the right and left hair braids that dry-fitted perfectly to their respective sides.

Above is the trade cloth feather train cloth that attaches to the back of the head and holds the feathers.

Above you see how the trade cloth fits to the back of the head. Dry-fitting was snug and the part fit perfectly to the back of the head.

Above is the bust plinth which has to be sanded at the bottom to remove the casting plug.

Conclusion:
An excellent kit depicting the proud Sioux Warrior. Dry-fitting of the parts was good. I would suggest the painter do some research prior to painting as the box art is not historically correct. Highly recommended. I hope we see more of Carl Reid's work released by Pegaso in the future.

Hello Guy

Fantastic figure and Great review .
After see your review this figure is in my wish list .

Warm Regards my friend

Mario

I'm surprised to see the small bits of this bust cast in resin. Pegaso is notorious for white metal, and I have to admit, I'm partial to resin, so I'm glad to see it! I really like this piece, I think the box art, although technically very very nice, doesn't do this sculpt justice. I think darker flesh tones would go a long way in making this piece a real standout. Guy, get to work with some of that "native" magic! Will most likely add this one to "the list" thanks in large part to your excellent review Guy!

I'm glad to hear you say this, Jay. I have read elsewhere of some pretty harsh comments directed at this piece and knowing the high quality of Carl's sculpting, thought it might be the boxart. These review pics make that clear to me. I would like to see it painted by another hand. The sculpt and casting look first rate.

A good review.
It may sell better if the box art was repainted, rather then looking like some Caucasian in "headdress and beads"

This was given a flogging recently in the News Section here on pF.

Carls sculpting in spot on; a quick Google image search will easily confirm this. Pity someone holding the paintbrush got the skin tone too far from the norm.

Kudos to Carl, the review of bare resin bares out the sculpting

Cheers

Hi Folks,

Thank you all for your kind compliments. Also thanks to Guy for an excellent reveiw!!!

It's not easy to paint Native American flesh tones convincingly. Lorenzo has done a great job technically, but it seems he started too pale and it only got paler as he progressed. I also think the pictures could be a little over exposed which doesn't help.

Lorenzo is an accomplished painter, his work stands for itself, but as I said previously Indians are not easy to master. I think we should all cut him a little slack and give him a chance. I for one have made many many mistakes over the years and I guess will make many more.

So together with Guy's great reveiw and some talented painters who are more familiar with the Native American look applying there skills to this piece, we should see some good examples on the competition tables around the world.

Thanks again Folks

Carl

It's a very nice sculpt, it reminds me the old Poste Militaire American Indian, on the other hand the paintjob and the photoshop work make it looking very bad.

Carl, you're right.

Lorenzo must be a top notch painter, or they wouldn't ask him to do box art.

Every artist has a stumble, and he may not have had the luxury of time to go back and correct.

Apologies to Lorenzo for sounding harsh, it is still very good painting, with smooth blends and I could learn much from his work

cheers

PS; Lorenzos other box art was the Bashibuzuk for Pegaso, seen here; http://www.pegasomodels.it/productdetails_en.asp?id=781

So, definitely highly skilled, and again, I apologise to Lorenzo for being harsh

Jamie, you don't need to apologise for expressing your opinion about the box art painting mate. Carl agreed with your comments about the skin tone and I don't think your comments were harsh at all. They were honest.

Hopefully Lorenzo will read these comments and take them on board, as they were intended - constructive criticism.

None of us should feel afraid to make constructive criticism, otherwise it just becomes a forum for patting each other on the back and pissing in each others' pockets.

I have just received this piece from Pegaso & can second what has been said here. Carl's sculpt is fantastic as Guy's photos bear witness to.

Like Carl, I think the box art photo may be a bit over-exposed & the model looks lighter than it actually is. Hopefully people will not be deterred from buying the model as a result - I am sure there will plenty on the competition tables soon.

Thanks for posting this, Guy. You are on the money about the box art and your review reveals the true face Carl has sculpted with such talent. I think the move to resin for all of the parts will prove a good one for Pegaso and hope they continue the practice. You be da Review man!
