That is really nifty, great anatomy and drapery. I thought at first that the shield looked a bit large. Maybe all the other are too small.~Gary

Really cool pose! Very much in the same spirit as the Soldiers 90mm viking hersir. I'm with Gary though, the shield looks at least 1/3 too large. Cool stuff though!

Apart from the shield being too large I think that no Viking would go in battle half naked, specially at lands where the Viking "usually" operated. The pose in great though, nice sculpting, I think is a great figure for a conversion......

Waaw.. he is really looking cool.

I wouldn't like to be on the receiving end of that axe.

Excellent sculpting, my brushes are already crying out to paint this dude..

Thanks a lot for posting Guy.

Thanks for the comments guys. About the shield. The archaeological evidence (Vikingarnas stridskonst, by: L M Enoksen) tells me that the Scandinavian shields at this time was around 100cm I diameter. Since I made this figure in the scale of 1/20 (being easy to calculate) the shield is suppose to be 5cm in diameter, knowing that I took some artistic freedom and made mine 4,89cm in diameter, so historically speaking the size is correct. How it looks that is a completely different matter. :)

I think the shield is no the problem, maybe the body looks kinda thin for a Viking boddy, the typical Viking looks big and strong also quite fat, maybe you try to sculpt a regular size Viking or a normal man. I like it...looks original and refreshing...

As a fun Viking i have to say that this is a totally refreshing view of one of them. The shield is definately no problem, and its showingbigger compared to the body in front that its mounted on. I will definately get to paint this one , and i would easily think for a 2 bodies fight vigniette. Now what the other would be ?
..............

The size of the shield? This is a case were it seems like artistic license has become the norm over the years.

Not that many shields have been found but the ones were diameter could be established range from 65cm to 105cm, with the main focus on 80-95cm. The best known probably the Gokstads shield being close to a meter(100cm) in diameter.

I think this figure represent the average anatomy for a viking. Being well above average height compared to rest of Europe, between 173-178cm and a slender body. Despite common belief of steaks and the alike, archelogical evindence points that turnips were a big part of the food as well as fish, seeds, berries and roots.

The Berserkers(Bärsärkar) took pride in entering combat unarmed, this fellow could show his lack of armour by being topless. ;)

This might have something to do with northern celtic tribes who fought naked as well to prove their courage and skill?

Cheers

The anatomy is also correct and typically Scandinavian. How do I know? I just looked in the mirror before sculpting :) Janne It will be cast in metal and the price is not set yet, I have to talk to Max as he is the moneyman.

Cheers guys

well I have to agree... the size of the shield is way to large...
n' as a matter of fakt... it doesn't look like a VIKING at all....
cause vikings are fat and unflexible, and they have cow-horns on their helmets. :)
and they could never swing an axe like that... cause all of the toadstols they eat...
and by the way... do they really have access?

but hey...the "bär-kassen" is mega-cool...

hare gott... ja kommer förbi nån gång i veckan på en fika....
