A few years back I bought a copy of "the north amercan indian (complete portfolios)" by Edward S Curtis, published by taschen. Over 700 pages of portraits and the odd staged wider shot. Some fantastic stuff in there.

Super images! one striking point; they all seem to be wearing the same shirt ,are these photo's of modern day indians dressed in the past .

Yes, there was a sale at Walmarto_O:ROFLMAO:

No they are from the past. I checked on several of them and they were part of Cody's Wild West Show. When the Show toured Europe, there was standing room only crowds. Queen Victoria enjoyed them so much, she had a special show done for the crown heads of Europe.

Don't forget to look at the superb works of artists Karl Bodmer and George Catlin if you want detailed, authentic depictions of Native people in color, before the advent of photography. Their combined work is invaluable as reference, painted right from the source.

Curtis' photographs and the site referenced, while still interesting, depict the reservation era and its material culture, which is much later and vastly different than the early 18th to middle 19th century, so often the theme of most sculpts.
