painting of Belgian Lancers making a stand against German dragoons, and two postcards of German Hussars; German Hussars also carried the lance.
Note : what the population called "Uhlans" were, judging by descriptions of eyewitnesses, not the actual Uhlanen (= lancers) but very often scouts and long range patrols from the Hussar regiments - people often mention "fur busbies" and "fur hats".
Belgian population feared the German "Uhlans" (or rather the Hussars ;) ), thought they were wild horsemen recruited by the Germans from some Asiatic tribe on the Steppes ...

... one wonders why there aren't more figures of the Cavalry of 1914 ... :)

In the toy soldier side of our hobby, some of the newer-makers have issued some very nice cavalry in the past 7 years or so. Britains, King & Country and Frontline come to mind, with both Imperial German in field gray, 1914 and in the later uniforms with Stahlhelm; and British/Commonwealth (incl. Australian lighthorsemen in Palestine); and French, 1914 and circa 1916. I think they all even included at least one figure apiece, depicting a rider and horse rigged for gas attacks.

Prost!
