Question — I've inherited some hard-rubber spin-cast molds that were made for metal alloy. Could they be used for casting resin instead? Or does that require a different type of mold?

Though I'm not an expert on casting, I would think they would be difficult to use for resin casting. I've only seen "box" type molds ever used for resin casting. Correct me if I'm wrong but are the molds for spin castings disk-like?~Gary

Yes, they're discs in which the casting material is thrown out from a pour hole in the center with substantial centrifugal force. The machines WERE originally used to cast resin things. But the molds I have were made for metal.

Might have to sacrifice one in a test drive ...

Watch out here. When metal is poured in the mould and spinned, it has only a short time in liquid form.As soon as it cools down is becomes vast again. Not so with resin. You would be running the spinner as long as the potlife. And I hope your mould doesn't have any vents on the exterior. The resin would be thrown out during spinning.
Another argument is: how much resin are you going to pour?Untill de pour hole is full? That's a waste. If it's metal you can put that piece back in the melting pot.No can do with resin.

Cheers,

Jiver

I recall that Worster Miniatures's used to spin cast his 120mm resin busts. The Lost Battalion picked up his line, but Terry still has his shop open. He might be able to anwser some of your questions. Here's the shop numbers that are listed in the San Diego white pages, 619-258-1888/1892.
