Forward.
I finally had the privileged opportunity to meet up with Stuart Hale, proprietor of the great Stormtrooper Miniatures while at Euro Militaire last month. As you will see from the photo below, Stuart has an impressive and eye-catching commercial display with a constantly expanding line up of figures and busts to drawl after. In fact the photo only tells a small part of the story as to the right was yet more to admire. It simply becomes impossible to walk past without saying hello and on this occasion I had even more reason to do so.
With a highly desirable catalogue of new releases on show here for the first time, I was invited to collect my review kits for the pages of Martin’s Scale Models. Today I have the first of those items for you to view, the superb 1/9th scale Sergeant Sharpshooter, 5th line battalion, Kings German Legion, la haye saint, Waterloo 1815. This promises to be a classic, lets get cracking and take a closer look………

First Impressions.
The box art used by Stormtrooper Miniatures sure has a way of drawing you in with its dynamic and eye-catching approach, that is certainly the case on this occasion. Ernesto Reyes has once more provided a breathtakingly beautiful finish to the completed figure and it is this artwork that so beautifully adorns the top of the box. lift off lid.
The lift off lid style of box is what we like to see and is what we get here. The box itself is extremely sturdy and practical doing a superb job of keeping the contents safe. Inside the box you will find all of the parts very well protected by layers of bubble wrap with smaller more delicate pieces packaged in clear plastic re-sealable bags. Any fragile parts likely to suffer from distortion are secured to stiff card. Under all of this you will find the reference material. As is always the case everything was in perfect condition with no damage or missing parts.

The Figure.
This is a 1/9th scale (90mm) multimedia kit requiring assembly and painting to complete. There are a total of 12 individual resin pieces along with wire and metal foil detailing parts. The resin is of a very nice consistency with a quality to match. a real joy to work with. Although there will be the inevitable flash, lugs and casting seams to deal with it should prove unproblematic and straightforward, especially to the seasoned modeller. Lets take a closer look at these individual pieces starting with the head……

The Head.
The facial features on this piece are really something rather special indeed, the most minute detail has been sculpted and captured to perfection and will prove a figure painters dream. The expression is beautifully animated, perfectly matching the figures pose as he appears to be doing close quarter battle with the enemy. If a quality face alone sells a figure then this will sell by the truck load!
Everything seems to be perfectly proportioned and anatomically correct, the standard features such as eyes, nose, mouth and ears already do great justice in being so beautifully portrayed, however add to this the likes of the moustache and sideburns giving more wonderfully exquisite detail and you can soon see why this is one of the best featured faces I have seen on a figure in a long time.

(photo below) Sublime sculpting skills from Carl Reid, such rich detail that holds up well in the casting. Magnificent.

The utterly amazing Belgic Shako helmet is going to be one of the stand out features of this bust, simply because it has been so faithfully and beautifully replicated with stunning precision under Carl’s expert sculpting skills. Comparing the kit offering to the fabulous reproduction helmet seen in the photos below, proportions appear spot on.
Excellent detailing and wonderful definition are present in the universal brass pattern GR (George III) helmet plate while the braided cord and tassels along with the rosette and plume are equally impressive. Just be aware that the braiding, tassels and plume for our KGL figure should be green in colour, not gold as seen in the photo below which is purely for reference purposes.

The Torso.
Just wow! This awesome piece is crammed full of intricate and wonderful definition and detail. The collar is shaped incredibly well while the main tunic material shows plenty of excellent creases and folds. Sitting nicely raised on the shoulders are the epaulets with distinctive buttons, the buttons and braiding on the front of the tunic equally impressive. Notice the open popped button second from bottom, what a great touch.
Laying naturally and convincingly over the tunic are the sword bandolier, bread bag linen strap, leather canteen strap and belt with ammunition pouch.

(photo below) The torso from the front, full of quite excellent detailing.

storm-11-635x1024.jpg

Around the back and the quality continues. A superb piece on which to build the rest of the kit.

(photo below) The torso seen from the back, quality continues to shine through.

storm-8-720x1024.jpg

The Left Arm.
The pose of the arms is perfectly matched and in keeping with the figures torso and lunging stance. The left arm when in situ will be raised with the elbow equal to neck height while the right arm is considerably lower giving the impression of the aggressive lunge.
The tunic sleeve is superb and totally accurate in its detail with creases and folds looking completely natural. The up turned cuff is fantastic with a good undercut in the resin giving excellent definition and layering while the sergeant stripes are just perfect in style and appearance. Along with the shoulder collar, all of this wonderful detail is going to come alive dramatically under paint and washes.

(photo below) The left arm, impressively detailed in every aspect.

storm-1-1024x779.jpg

The Right arm.
Just as above, quality oozes from every angle with this right arm. Clean up of both pieces will be quick and easy with the fit to the main body being precise. The recesses for the hands is accurate and well engineered, you will not find any complications in these kits from Stormtrooper, just solid quality through and through.

(photo below) The right arm, more of the same superb quality.

storm-2-967x1024.jpg

The bread bag.
The bread bag is a prominent feature, here we see the linen material very nicely moulded in resin with folds and creases to produce an accurate representation. The strap is already moulded in situ on the figure so its simply a case of matching this part up, excellent sculpting of course ensures a first class fit.

(photo below) The bread bag (haversack) has been sculpted to fit the figure perfectly, another excellent addition.

storm-3-1024x922.jpg

(photo below) A replica linen bread bag (haversack). Authentic in detail and appearance, the kit part looks every bit as good.

Adj_Bread_bag-749x1024.jpg

The Canteen.
Plenty of decent and authentic quality features are present in the fabulous looking canteen. The beautifully rounded shape, the rim, the leather side strapping and spout looking every bit like the real item. The lines between the individual wood segments around the circumference and indeed on the front side looks sensational adding real character and charm to the piece. Attachment to the body will be by the included metal foil seen further down the page.

(photo below) Detail on this accurately reproduced canteen is superb.

The Baker Rifle.
The iconic Baker Rifle has been sculpted with both of the figures hands attached, the left gripping the underside of the forward stock and the right gripping the stock just behind the trigger guard. The rifle was mass produced and came in a variety of styles, the kit offering is highly impressive and will be another superb stand out feature of the completed figure.

(photo below) The Baker Rifle is a beautiful example of more fine sculpting. The hands show equally impressive detailing.

storm-4-1024x315.jpg

The concept of the hands being moulded in situ would appear to work well. Certainly looking at the photo below detail is strong and exceptionally well defined in both features.

(photo below) Great attention to detail in the right hand while the firing mechanism of the Baker Rifle is equally impressive.

storm-5-2-1024x426.jpg

More superb detail has been sculpted into the right hand, in the photo we see the index finger hooked inside the trigger guard poised to move forward to the trigger at any moment. The remaining fingers grip the recess in the stock just behind the trigger guard, detail is exceptional in the nails and shows great definition. The decorative scrolling on the side plate of the Baker Rifle certainly adds more interest, another quality touch and fantastic attention to detail.

(photo below) Incredible detail in the side plate of the Baker Rifle, the right hand is exceptional too.

storm-6-1024x683.jpg

Once more finger detail is super fine, a really nice natural looking grip ensures both hands are anatomically correct. Excellent attention to detail can be seen in the knuckles, joints and fingernails.

(photo below) The left hand moulded in situ, super fine detail ensures the quality continues here.

storm-6-2-1024x683.jpg

(photo below) The iconic Baker Rifle. A mass produced infantry rifle of the time, just one example of many can be seen below. The kit offering is certainly impressive.

The Powder Horn, Buckles and Rifle Sling.
Other accessories included the rifle sling and buckles along with the powder horn. The powder horn is beautifully shaped while the sling and buckles are finely detailed.

(photo below) A stunning and wonderful collection of Napoleonic powder horns.

Powder-Horns-1024x693.jpg

This sword bayonet screams quality, to keep that blade so precise and in scale it has been necessary to sculpt and cast it beautifully thin, what a thoroughly wonderful end product we see here. You will naturally need to take great care when handling this piece, especially during the clean up process, however the results will be well worth your added patience and precautions. The handle and knuckle guard show exquisite detail while attachment to the musket is simple and precise.

(photo below) Baker rifle sword bayonet, beautifully crisp detail.

storm-9-2-1024x616.jpg

(photo below) Looking at this magnificent Napoleonic sword bayonet below, I would say the kit part has been faithfully replicated with great style.

I really like these display plinth’s that come packaged with the Stormtrooper kits. Practical, stylish and functional there is not much more you can ask for. Your finished bust is going to look sensational displayed on this, minimal clean up required.

(photo below) The familiar and stylish plinth, an excellent inclusion and superb manner in which to display your completed bust.

storm-8-2-779x1024.jpg

The last of the accessories sees the inclusion of metal foil (used for part of the rifle sling and the canteen sling) along with wire for attachment of the powder horn.

When this was released by Stormtroopers a while ago, there were a few photo's, this is a wonderful review. Just what you expect from Stormtroopers, I have a few of the 1/i6th busts but I like this one a lot.
Thanks for taking the time to show and review it. Now at the top of my wish list.

All the best, Martin.

Why is the Scots Grey holding the reins in the US not the UK style? Likewise his stirrup straps/leathers are longer than usual for the UK. Very nicely sculpted figure otherwise.
