While my father served as a member of Waffen-SS at the Eastern front wrecking his health my granddad - a former officer in WWI - refused to ignore his jewish ex-business partners and maintained a very friendly contact to them in the public. Therefore he was visited by Gestapo-officers but ignored the "advice" given and so ended up in a special site where he "dissappeared" for a couple of weeks. He never told what happened to him during that time.
You are right Colin - it took guts to go against this regime at it`s time and harsh judgements about the people that were living then are made all too easy from today`s perspective and safety
