Hello All,

Very impressed with the work on this site,i am fairly new to figures, well other than the old basic job for armor and find myself leaning towards solely figures now and have been trying different scales and was wondering if any of you could tell me what i could work on special to better my skills especially the flesh tones.
This pic is a 120mm Verlinden figure and it is my first serious attempt at this scale.
Any critiquing would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Grizzly

This is my first bust from Warriors. I use enamels solely but am looking into using oils like i see in posts from the others.

Thomas, Welcome. Very nice work, you sem to be well on your way. There are a number of mediums used by the painters on this site, so I'm sure you find what you're looking for, and given that there is a lot of active participation here you won't be disappointed. Enjoy.~Gary

I second what Gary says, this site is fast becoming a mecca for us all, your work looks well on its way teh help and advice you get here is second to nonein my opinion.

Hello Thomas
Great work, I think your verlinden figure is very good.
what exactly want you to do better?
I Think it looks very great.
Only the gras in front(I think) you can do better.
Your flesh tones need better pics to see more details.

Welcome to the Planet Thomas,

Yor work is great and you will discover what you are most comfortable with painting with in time. I find that I use all of the mediums and do not lock myself into just acrylics or just oils. I use both in addition to enamels too. It just takes time to develop your own style and it looks like you are well on your way to do that. Keep up the great work and show us more when you can.

Thanks for the kind words guy's, wanted to show more pics of these two items plus a hornet figure as my first solo as in no vehicles and stuff but couldn't figure how to post in the gallery yet.
As for the grass base on my 120mm Stephan i agree groundwork is my weak point but i'm practicing. Guy i like enamels i know how to use them but have been seeing some great work in oils and have been thinking of trying those,as for acrylics i don't really care for them but i haven't tried all the newer brands yet, what brand of acrylics do you guy's use?

your on the right track, looks great :) nice clean and tight (y), a little more polish with some highlights and shadows and you'll right on top in no time!

Looks great Grizzly! (y) I would give oils a try when painting your flesh tones. It will give more brush time and it will give you a chance to play w/ different shades and highlights.

Welcome to the planet!

I agree, there is some very impressive work on this site. I think your work is very good as well, even considering you're new to figures. The uniforms I see are nicely done. If you're going to continue painting larger figures, then oils are probably going to be your best bet. I use a multi-media approach on my figures, but primarliy use oils for the finish coat. As you progress you'll want to get a little more aggressive with shadows and highlights to create drama on you faces. Read all you can, and don't be afraid to try new things. I look forward to seeing your work.

Thomas, as far as I can see you have a very good feel for the right colours - that german field grey looks right, and the khaki on the Belgian helmet he's holding looks spot on - I did have just such a (real) helmet years ago (fairly inexpensive then - about 12 euro) and I must say that is exactly the colour that I recall.

Welcome to planetfigure (y)

Thomas, welcome to the planet! :) Your painting looks great! Looks like it's just a matter of time and you'll be right up there. My advice would be to develope good observation skills and don't be affraid to ask specific questions when you see something you like or maybe don't understand. There are a lot of EXCELLENT painters and sculpters on this site that are willing to share their thoughts, observations and ideas to help others along. We run the gammit of professionals to weekend warriors, each with unigue insight and skills. I've found them to be an invaluable resource and inspiration. Hope you will too!

Thomas-

Welcome to planet.

All the advice so far is very good. The only add'l comments that I'll make is to continue to look at other sites, books and mags. Alot of times, for me, seeing how others have tackled a particular item is a big help as I am relatively new to fig painting.

As has already been said, ask questions. I have found great help here many times! (y)
