For the attention of the Directors of the WMFS,

I, Vincenzo Macaluso, President of the Associazione Culturale di Modellismo e Approfondimento Storico (A.C.M.A.S.) “I NORMANNI”, hereby wish to submit a bid on behalf of the A.C.M.A.S. to organise the upcoming World Expo 2014.

This bid has received the backing and approval of the Local Authority of Monreale.
Monreale is a town lying 3 km from Palermo, easily reached by the following means:
• Air: the national / international airport of Palermo “Falcone Borsellino” is just 30 km from the city, about 35 km from Monreale;
• Sea: Palermo’s port has regular connections to Genoa for those wishing to come by car from mainland Europe. The port is in the city, 6 km from Monreale;
• Rail: Palermo Central Station is less than 5 km from Monreale.

The site proposed for hosting the event is the impressive Guglielmo II complex adjoining the Cathedral in the Norman old town. This is a beautifully restored ex-Benedictine monastery dating back to the 1300’s. Exhibition areas can be viewed in the attached floor plans and photos.
The exhibits themselves will be set out on specially designed raised surfaces 1.2m high, placed on three different levels, each 20 cm deep, extending the whole length of the exhibition tables. Show cases will be provided for the most prestigious collections and for exhibits by world famous artists. All the exhibition tables will be surrounded by cordons to avoid exhibits being touched or tables being accidentally pushed.

As part of the organisation of World Expo 2014, a multi-lingual website will be set up so that over the intervening 3 years, the public may follow developments, receive updates on progress, obtain details for contacting the organisers and in the final phase, specify items for competition on line. The site will also list hotels and accommodation for hosting participants, with multimedia links to all the hotels; it will include local restaurants, the main artistic and cultural sites in Monreale, Palermo and other local areas, information on parking spaces, taxi ranks, car rental and other information for getting around Monreale and Palermo.

The following roles will be held by the organisers:
• President
• Local Authority / Sponsor liason officer
• Company liason officer
• Press officer
• Exhibition coordinator
• Trading space coordinator
• Photographer
• Treasurer
• Artist liason officer
• Collectors liason officer

The Organising committee will also set up a trading area in the outside spaces around the monastery: in the panoramic gardens with splendid views over Palermo and the Conca d’Oro valley. A state-of-the-art gazebo will be erected, providing a spacious, comfortable setting for exhibitors, traders and visitors to enjoy the pleasant Mediterranean surroundings. Trade areas can be seen in the attached floor plans and photos.

At least 10 PCs will be available to exhibitors in the model competition, for registration and allocation of exhibition spaces.

Over the three days of the competition, there will be:
• Conferences on history and heritage with national and international speakers;
• Conferences on uniformology with national and international speakers;
• Art demonstrations by world famous artists;
• Sculpting demonstrations by world famous artists.

To commemorate the event, the A.C.M.A.S. will apply for a special stamp to be issued by the Italian Post Office.
In the case of a successful bid for World Expo 2014, as well as a commemorative stamp, there will be a postcard and postmark issued in honour of the occasion.

To mark the event, a world famous artist will be commissioned to create a limited edition commemorative figurine that can be purchased by participants at the show.

600 medals will be available as awards – gold, silver and bronze. The best works in each category will be awarded with a medal and an original 1800s lithograph, worth about €500. The BOS will be an original 1700s lithograph of a view of Palermo, by Abbot Sennon, the most accomplished engraver of the 18th century, current value about €1500.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation on parchment.
There will also be a range of special prizes and awards from sponsors.

The show will have the added attraction of various reenactments.

During the show, there will be an exhibition of historic artefacts, uniforms and outfits from the past from the Piraino collection in the Piraino Costume Museum which includes the wardrobes of the family of Prince Giulio Fabrizio Tomasi di Lampedusa, whose family stories make up the narrative of the famous novel “Il Gattopardo”.

The event may take place from the 15th May to the 30th September (We think that the best weeks would be either 9-15 in June or 1-7in September), a period when the climate in Sicily is especially pleasant.

In order to organise the Expo, the Association of hotel owners in Palermo has been involved and are able to put 1400 hotel places at our disposal, made up of single and double rooms. An agreed discount is also planned for the price of single rooms. In the attachments, hotels may be viewed - available to all those who wish to attend the World Expo 2014 and enjoy the chance to visit the lovely town of Monreale, Palermo and the many historic, artistic and monumental sites of Western Sicily.
Trips will be organised on request (see attachments) to the following locations:

Palermo (5 km)
Cefalù (50 km)
Mondello (7 km)
Segesta (80 km)
Selinunte (105 km)
Erice (115 km)
Transfer by minibus will be arranged with the main hotels around the area of the show. Agreements are also held with the taxi companies in Monreale and Palermo to offer special discounts for links with more distant hotels (8 km) outside Monreale.

Regarding the panel of judges, the A.C.M.A.S. are honoured to announce that the panel will be made up of well-known, unbiased figures from the WMFS, the CIMS (Coordinamento Italiano Modellismo Statico) – the largest model-building federation in Italy, uniting 62 national modelling clubs - and world famous Artists.

The above is the programme that will be organised in the case of the Associazione Culturale di Modellismo e Approfondimento Storico “I NORMANNI” being allowed the honour to host this prestigious event.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours truly,

Monreale, 16th May 2011

President of A.C.M.A.S.
Vincenzo Macaluso
