Hi to one and all on this fine day,
Following on from my recent look at fantasy release from
called "The Old Dragon" here on PF
http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/the-old-dragon-from-mj-miniatures.72859/watch-confirm
Its my pleasure to share the next from this company , as before working with a sculptor from Tiny Leads.
What are we looking at:
What is MARAUDER?
"A marauder is defined in the law to be 'one who, while employed in the army as a soldier, commits larceny or robbery in the area of the camp, or while wandering away from the army.' But in the modern and metaphorical sense of the word, as now sometimes used in common speech, it seems to be applied to a class of persons who are not a part of any regular army, and are not answerable to any military discipline, but who are mere lawless banditti, engaged in plundering, robbery, murder, and all conceivable crimes."
(Black's Law Dictionary)
That is what we are looking at in this character , often the people whisper and comment behind his back , but never to his face , he cares not , for when the need for fighting is close they will need him and welcome him with open arms .
He fights for whoever pays , no bother what banner he is under , he has been educated in the terror and skill of war and killing and uses this to great advantage to fill his purse overflowing.
He cares nothing for the reasoning behind the fight , nor for the dead that will surround him , he is happy he is being paid to do what he does best ...kill ..its all he knows and indeed wants to know.
He is good at killing and enjoys the thrill ....
he is "The Dark Marauder"
This release is in the 1/9 scale range and is as with the other a complete departure to other releases being military ...adding another dimension to the products and the company.
Lets see what we are looking at in the Review:
Title: The Dark Marauder
Reference: MJ09-004
Scale: 1/9th
Material: Light Grey Resin
No of Pieces: 2
Sculptor: Antonio Fernandez or "Piqui"
Box Art: Man-Jin, Kim
As usual the box quality is very high with a colour picture of the subject on the top and a story from the sculptor on the back setting the scene in your mind before you open the box , the resin was held in a clear bag which was then in a bubblewrap bag ....protecting the contents really well .
Prep is as with the Dragon bust very minimal and easy to deal with , there is a fine casting line running along the back of the neck and down the cloak ...easy to sand away in addition it has 3 small and again easily removed pieces from the undersides , leaving a super smooth almost silky feel to the resin.
Lets look at the main piece the Torso , this as seen includes the head and is ready for painting once the casting remnants have been removed , washed and then primed .

Looking at the attire of our marauder he has armour on with a fantastic skull worked into the breast area , this is a lovely bit of sculpting , great details on the teeth , the eye sockets are well formed and very nicely worked, at the top of the skull there is metallic decoration or perhaps you might paint as leather , nicely detailed as seen.
At his shoulder we have armoured protection , again with good patterning along the same style as on the skull , in all the decoration we have good undercuts.
Across his left shoulder we have a large plate of armour with what could be teeth from his foes , I like the idea of teeth ...all razor sharp , providing protection from his enemies swords .....or perhaps a magical power is released from them.
Across his shoulders he has put on a cloak , perhaps not the right word as this is a blanket in tatters , full of tears and holes , these are nicely worked , this is all he has to protect against the cold winds of death in the forest.

On now to what makes the bust ..the face and this really does make this piece , almost skull like in appearance , sunken cheeks , proud chin , mouth in a upturned scowl , some of his upper lip has been cut away in a fight , teeth showing ( nice details here) , the lower lip shows good surface texture , the jowls are well worked .
His eyes are sunken back into the head , good detailing on the eyelids , the eyes piercing through the muscular strength in the face , the nose has been broken ..far too many times than he cares to remember.
The head is thickset with powerful pronounced brow , bald headed , with wounds showing one is held together by rivets and a plate , nice details her..but boy I bet that hurt!!
Ears are almost cauliflower in appearance , big but in keeping with the head itself .

In short would you argue with him ...not me for sure .
What I most like about this piece is the opportunity to go wild with the colours especially on the skin tones , look at the box art for ideas or google!!!
Of course you could also paint leather effects or metals in NMM .....its a fun piece and a classic bust in style.
The Base , this is a simple pedastal type very little clean up as I said and perfectly suitable for its purpose.
Final Thoughts
This is a fun piece to review , simple in style , working well with the companion release , good deep features are seen . The piece allows the painter to do as he wishes with no uniform constraints . This is a good addition and I look forward to seeing more from this team of MJ and Tiny Leads
Recommended ...a lot of fun
Lets have a couple of views of the completed version by MJ ...
ENJOY
