Dear Members,
I would like to present to your my newest creation:
the Defender of the Jasna Gora Monastery AD 1655.

This is a story of the dark days of the Deluge, or the Swedish,
Russian, Cossack etc invasion of Poland and Lithuania during 1655-60.
On November 18, 1655 the Swedish army (mostly German mercenaries) of
2250 men laid siege to the one of the most holy places of the Kingdom of
Poland, so called Jasna Gora (Bright Hill) monastery at Chestochowa. By
the end of the month Swedish army reached the strength of 3200
(including some 800 Polish cavalry sworn to the Swedish King) men and 19
guns, including two 24-pounders.
Against these odds Polish defenders of the monastery had some 70 monks,
120 soldiers and 80 volunteers lead by Stanislaw Warszycki and prior
August Kordecki plus 30 pieces of artillery (largest 12 -pounder).
The defenders and attackers fought mostly artillery duel until December
27 1656 when Swedish army withdrew, but twice in Decdember Polish
forces carried out successful sorties against the Swedish heavy guns,
destroying or damaging the pieces and killing cannon crews.
The siedge was not bloody but it significance was very strong as it was
immediately highly publicized and thus influenced the whole war.
Films have been made out it and books and poems written, the most famous
is one by Henryk Sienkiewicz, see below.
Whole siege nicely described here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Jasna_Góra
also Polish Noble prize winner, Henryk Sienkiewicz described this siege
in this book "Potop" or "The Deludge" -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Deluge_(novel)
the novel can be read here on Google
http://books.google.com/books?id=deohAAAAMAAJ&dq=deluge+sienkiewicz

I am depicting here one of the noble (szlachta) defenders who moved by
patriotism and religious zeal (Catholics versus Protestant) joined the
fight against the Swedish forces, as you can see he is not hindered by
his wounded arm and he actually has put all his trust in his sharp sabre
(szabla) and Holy rosary.

I sculpted him from Super Sculpey , in 200 mm scale - he is 90mm high
plus his sabre. He will be available commercially, I hope.

Hi Ducz,

great sculpting, I really like it! And here we have a screaming bust with hands, relating to a recent discussion in another topic...
Well done, look forward to see it painted!
Thanks
Denes

I love the facial expression - in fact, the whole piece is very dramatic. It's great to see a bust with attitude like this, and congrats on the sculpting. The textures are all very well done.

Very nicely done. Over all it is very well sculpted. The hands are very nice, the fur the folds, the action and intent are read very easily. I would like to comment that with his eyes closed down so far, the emotion of the piece will diminish because we won't be able to read the stern look in his eyes. It may not be popular, but I think the face on a bust is the most important feature. With that said, we as humans generally look immediately into the eyes of who we are looking at. I think an intent look with the eyes open but focused behind a determined and furrowed brow would work better. Still a beautiful and creative piece. Should paint up with nice drama. Thanks for sharing.

Good call, Jay. I agree. Nice piece but the eyes look closed. The detail work is really well done.
