Tommys War
A Fixture
I had seen the set of busts with the title 'The Dungeon Adventurers' some months ago, before I knew they were the brainchild of two good friends of mine Antonio Fernandez ('Piqui') and Alex Varela ('Iguazzu').
The set of figures comprised 5 x 1/12 busts:
So, I was delighted when I heard the guys were starting their own figure company and this set will form their first release. As a youngster I used to play a bit of Dungeon and Dragons (yes, I know what you're thinking! A guy that cool, hip and 'street' played D&D - but beneath this Bond-esque appearance there is a bit of geek) so the figures really appealed to me, they really stylised on that D&D era so have a really cool feel to them. As soon as the figures went online I ordered a set.
Tiny Leads is actually formed of three artists: Maria Fernandez provides the concept art, Antonio sculpts and Alex paints the box art. This is certainly a winning combination based on this release.
The set with the title 'The Dungeon Adventurers' is limited to 150 sets and priced at 70 euros
Fortunately, I do get a good Christmas holiday from work, so my first day was yesterday and with a stroke of good timing I answered the door to the postman yesterday (my first day of holiday) wielding a parcel from Spain (Happy Christmas Darren, from Darren!). On opening the jiffy bag I was presented with a very attractive board box, printed with the Tiny Leads logo:
The box was in great condition with no damage at all. On opening I first came to a really nice set of cards of each of the figures. On the face an illustration of each of the figures by Maria and on the reverse the painted figure by Alex. I have to say not only the illustrations superb and the box art sublime the quality of the cards is really, really nice. They have a matt finish on a really nice stock board.
Also included was a small sticker (great for the figure carrying case), a small button badge and a card which has the number of the kit, out of 150.
Under that was a layer of foam packaging which protects the figures:
The figures themselves form caricatures of the usual characters associated with, well, dungeons...
There is the slightly eerie wizard, the strong barbarian, the handsome knight (clearly modelled on me) and the grumpy old dwarf, clearly modelled on... I'll let you insert your own joke here.
The figures are cast in a dark resin with no moulding lines and little (if any) clean-up needed:
Knight
Elf
Dwarf
Wizard
Barbarian
With their really cool design and crisp, sharp casting these really are a great little set of busts. My only complaint is that the whole presentation is so good that it seems a shame to take them out and paint them!
The figures are cast so well they just need a wash and an undercoat and off you go. The cards do offer an indication of how to paint them, but there is great scope to paint these in many different styles and colours.
Overall, I'm delighted with this set, great presentation, great quality and a subject different from the norm. Well done to Maria, Antonio and Alex and I really do wish them well with this venture and look forward to their future releases.
Verdict: Excellent, highly recommended!
