Hi Folks

Now limbering up to finish off my Australian Light Horseman by Steve Warrilow (The Fusilier).
I bought it from Steve years ago at Euro Militaire and it sat in my stash for yonks. Finally started on him early last year and then stopped to do other stuff ( for the boss).

I’ve now got the time to try and do him justice.....my wife has promised me a display cabinet when we move!

Still got quite a lot to do with the horse and the rider .....and then there’s the groundwork. Should keep me busy for a while. One thing that’s got me with this subject is the widely differing reference material covering the colours of uniform and equipment. I know that these guys fought in some pretty harsh climates and conditions so things did natural bleach and change colour, but if anyone has any advice , I’d be very grateful.

Regards
Kev

Looks very nice that Kev. Steve Warrilow did a lovely range of figures and I always used to enjoy browsing his stall at Euro. Many of them have stood the test of time very well and it's a shame they're no longer available. This was a popular one, and on the rare occasions it pops up on the second-hand market it's always snapped up straight away.

Thanks Steve, i remember it being a lot of money for me at the time but, looking back, I’m so glad I picked I made the right decision. As you say, it’s so rare now and it’s still one of my favourites.

Now you come to mention it, wouldn’t it be nice if this lockdown lifted enough for a new Euro show!

All the best

Unfortunately Kev it's cancelled again this year. It was slated to go ahead in the 3rd week of September but Steve Kirtley (who now runs the show) announced on Facebook a couple of months back that he's had to cancel it for the second year running due to various covid-related uncertainties, such as it not yet being clear whether overseas visitors would be able to attend, and also financial uncertainties tied in with all that.

He's hoping it will be back up and running in 2022.

I was just dreaming really Steve. Just about everything to do with anything I’m interested in has been cancelled this year. Hang on....that sounds as if I have “issues”.... (lol). Never mind, back to the bench.....2022 should be amazing!!

Keep safe buddy.

Hi Kev,
Excellent work on this. Splendid painting. Nitpicking I know but you have his colour patch as 4th LH, and that regiment was one that did not wear the emu or any other plume. See post #7 on this thread. It is a regular mistake that people think all of the LH regiments wore an emu plume during the Great War.

Cheers

Hi Kev

Great to see this being worked on , all from Steve W have a special look and stand the test of time

Like the way this is looking , good uniform colouring , yiu might like to weather the clothing a little

Following with interest

Happy benchtime

Thanks Chris, I got a bit confused with all the info on the net so stuck to the kit instructions. Always liked the film, though it’s a bit cheesy in places, and even they got it wrong!

But your observation is one of the very reasons I joined PF. You guys have so much knowledge and experience and I’m always keen to learn. Do you know if any LH Regts. wore the emu plume and had a shoulder sleeve patch during the Great War.

Thanks again

Thanks Nap

I know I’ve got a fair bit of work to do on him yet and he certainly needs a bit of weather in. Also got a fair bit of bridle work to do, inc. the reins, which I’m not really looking forward to, but it’s gotta be done! I’ll try and post in stages as I’ve had some helpful tips already and it’s all very much appreciated.

Thanks again

Excited to see this one being painted up & has begun well.
Detail looking fine, apart from shoulder patch explained by ChrisR (an expert ;-) ).
Like what you’ve done with different front & back horse socks.

See Chris’s post on Dolman ALH bust

Hi All,

For those wishing to paint this fine bust below is a colour photo of the LH AIF slouch hat of the Great War. Note the colour and style of the puggaree (not pleated as often shown and appear to be in the work above) and that the badge is black oxidised (shown on the hat beside the LH version) rather than brassView attachment 416443

Additionally, here is a link to the various LH colour patches. https://www.lighthorse.org.au/4-regimental-colour-patches/

Note the 6th ALH Regiment wore a wallaby fur skin puggaree, while some LH regiments did NOT wear the emu plume but simply the slouch hat without a plume. Those that didn't wear the plume included the 4th (Victoria - often erroneously shown with the plume), 6th (NSW) and 7th (NSW) LH regiments, and it appears other NSW regiments didn't - a photo of the 1st LH Regiment prior to departure in 1914 shows them without emu plumes.

The Queensland LH regiments (2nd, 5th, 11th- part raised in South Australia, and the 14th) wore the plume, and when the 3rd Light Horse Brigade (8th (Victoria), 9th (South Australia) and 10th (Western Australia) LH regiments) arrived in Egypt in February 1915 wearing emu plumes it caused a furore amongst the Queenslanders who saw it as their distinguishing mark. Article on the subject here https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/encyclopedia/lhplumes/feathers

Hope this helps with the modelling and painting.

Cheers

Thanks Mike, the level of knowledge and experience you guys have is quite an inspiration to me. This one has always been one of my favourites so I’m hoping I can do him justice. I have a great book on horse breeds which I use a lot plus of course Google. The horse itself (I think) isn’t looking too bad, but the saddlery needs a lot of TLC yet. I know I’ve got a fair way to go yet before I’m as satisfied as I’ll ever get, but with you guys around me, where can I go wrong..... (aren’t they someone’s famous last words (lol)!)

By the way, I really like your weathering technique. If I can get anywhere near your standard of finish, I’d be more than happy.

Thanks again Mike.

Stunning work Kev! :)(y)

Cheers,
Ken

Thank Ken, I spotted the other day, I’ve made a bit of a mess of each side of the horses bit. I’m no expert, but I think they should be at the same angle and I’ve got mine slightly misaligned. Gonna have to be careful rectifying that!

Here’s hoping !

All the best

Kev

Hi Kev,

Those that wore the plume with the rectangular colour patch were the 2nd, 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th.

They also got the memorial at Beersheba wrong Kev.

Cheers
Chris

Chris, you’re an absolute star! Thanks for your help, it’s very much appreciated.

Can’t believe they got the memorial wrong! I suppose most people just assume that all ALH units wore the plume. It’s nice to know my chap will be properly badged when I’ve finished. For me, the plume has got to stay as its quite iconic to them (though a Queenslander might not agree! Apparently the ALH were regarded as quite a tough, “confident” lot and I can just imagine all the bar fights that broke out when these guys rode into town (lol)!

Thanks again Chris

All the best

Kev

Looking good. I have this one. It was gifted to me by the family of a fellow modeler, now departed. Missing at least one part and assembly/painting instructions for all those bits of gear. Going to use your photos as a guide for assembly and parts inventory. I know I am missing the rifle butt and hopefully nothing else.
