Yes it is. I remember seeing it "in the flesh" last year and being very surprised at how compact it really is. The base is only mybe 8 inches to 10 inches square-amazing.

Yes! In my opinion it is the Mother of ALL figure dioramas. Gorgeous work!

Does anybody know what this sold for? I heard a crazy rumor it was the ball park of $20,000   Could this be true? I know his single figger's can fetch a grand or more.

Sorry to get of topic...just amazing stuff!

This sure is the one

When the article on building it appeared in Military Modelling magazine
I suddenly felt compelled to rush out and buy a box of paper clips.

In my personal opinion Bill Horan is the complete modeller
and on the occasions that I have spoken to him a thoroughly
nice guy.

Bill is a really nice guy. What amazes me is the fact that he can sculpt, paint and mount a figure in less time than it takes me to prime. Seriously he can do a 54mm in 3 days or so.

Gandamak is still my favorite though. It's in a private collection.

Per me si va nella citta dolente, per me si va fra l.eterno dolore,Giustizia mosse il piu alto fattore. Dante Alighieri  entering the first circle of hell,in the Divine Comedy.

In all honesty, albeit I do not consider what we do true art.but rather modeling for relaxation,I differ when it comes to Bill Horan, he is without a doubt a complete artist in the true sense of the word.

I saw this at MFCA a few years ago and was amazed. I must have taken 30 pictures of it.

Bill is a very nice gut and I found him very approachable to talk to. I saw a few of his baseball players at Chicago this year. They were incredible. I agree with Roc, He is an artist.

Hi Roc

Well this beast blew me away when it appeared on the cover of MilMod back in the late 80s.
I was at university, not really modelling at all at the time (nearly given it up), then BLAM! this thing appeared! And, there was an article! Like Frank, I got myself some paperclips and ..............

The mother.....

Hi everybody!

Taken from Bill Horan's Military Modelling Masterclass book:

"A six-month project which took aprox. 500 hours' work in all. Gandamak gradually took on life of its own. Initially the author had planned for the diorama to consist of eight to ten figures, the six central figures around cap. Souter (with the colours wrapped around his waist under his Afghan coat) forming the focus. It escaleted to a final count of 27 figures. (Best of Show, 1988 Euro-Militaire and Chicago Show)."

It took me nearly 30 hours to "paint" mi first 54mm.
He IS my favourite.

saludos.

I tell you one thing although the painting is fantastic, its the staging that does it for me. Every last detail is thought through, a diorama like this really has to be thought through a thousand times to be this good, it don't happen by accident.

If I remember right you can look at it all way round and it works from any angle, PURE GENIUS.

Robin,

No, this thing didn't happen by accident... the great Bill got his inspiration from another masterpiece, a painting by William Barnes Wollen. Nothing wrong with that however, and you gotta have loads of talent to reproduce such a good painting in 3D.

Hi Johan

I know the painting, the painting only works from the front as its 2D, great painting, but Bill makes this work all ways rounf, he took that painting and breathed the day into it, if you get my meaning.

Robin

You have a point Robin, and personally I'd love to see how Bill does WB Wollen's "The Black Watch at Quatre Bras" and "The 28th North Gloucestershire at Waterloo", or even "The defeat of the Prussian Guard at Nonnebosschen 1914 by the 52nd Ox and Bucks". Each would make great diorama's when done by a modeller of the calibre of BH.
But I believe that after doing Gandamak he said something like "never again"...

Yup he sure did so I believe, one of my throw ins for him to do would be closing of the gate at Hougemont farm( I am sure it was Hougemont)

said never again then did Ghosts of Chilliwallah.

Good modeller that Bill Horan

Robin

Closing of the gates at Hougoumont? Ambitious, that! :)
Robin, I saw "Chicamauga", and several of his single figures.... great work, and you could all single them out as "BH" on the tables - the man has his own style.

.... The KGL Light Batallion at La Haye Sainte, that would be a great subject for a diorama. I hope someone will do it one day.... ;)
