The Major shifted uncomfortably in his saddle. In more than 35 years of campaigning he had never seen mist so thick, it clung to the ground covering everything in an eerie shroud. He could barely see the ears of his horse, how was he supposed to spot the advance of the rebels? He listened intently hoping to catch the ***** of metal on metal or boot on ground that might give away the enemy's presence. The silence didn't fill him with much confidence; how would his men fare in the heat of battle? The militia looked very fine on the parade ground outside Taunton castle, but out here on the ghostly Somerset Levels it would be a different story. If only he had a few of his Cornish Foot from the wars, they'd soon put this rabble to flight.

The bust could represent a senior officer from most European armies at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries.

Elan Miniatures will be with MDP at Welling, Sword & Lance, Salute and BMSS Nationals in April in the UK

Thank you all for the comments
Roger, the text is about Sedgemoor, but I made it up, based on some of the background reading I did for this piece. I try and write a little piece about all the figures in the Elan13 range, they accompany each one on the website, for me it gives them some character. I used to live a few miles from the battle site, near Bridgwater in Somerset. Most of the time the levels are a lovely place, though I did once get caught in an evening mist and got hopelessly lost on the back lanes.

You made it up? I could have sworn I'd read it somewhere before. It's not long since I read The Duke of Monmouth's West Country Rebellion by Nigel Clarke, interesting stuff and on my list (a long list) of flat projects I'd like to do.

Good luck with it.

Roger.

posted by Roger "Excellent sculpt and painting Rob but please put me out of my misery... where is the Sedgemoor (if it is Sedgemoor) quote from? I'm sure I've read it before but....."
Roger Sedgemoor is in Somerset just east of Bridgewater and Taunton it's part of the Somerset levels (wetlands) . and in the area where Alfred hid out from the Saxons and if you believe in King Arthur near the Vale of Avalon
There's a fantastic new museum at Taunton Castle that has a section devoted to the Monmouth Rebillion , so if your ever this way pop in it's free ,There is a book showing the names of rebels who were executed or deported for taking part in supporting Monmouth , some of my ancestors on on the open page . Taunton is a great town for a day visit .

Cheers Chippy, if I'm ever down that way I'll definitely pay the battlefield and museum a visit. I have a distant memory of stopping at the Sedgemoor motorway services on the way home from Devonport once.

I have already posted on this ...I really like it ...what I find great about Robs range is the character all the pieces have , all are individuls

Looking forward to getting my brushes round this one

I've seen this sculpt in the flesh and I must say the detail on it is very sharp and well defined, good to see it finished Rob, He looks good.
