Kit # 54022

First of all, yes, this is the second review and was done with the FULL cooperation between myself and Guy Herrick. After finding out I purchased this kit recently, Guy wanted the review re-done and asked me to do it as his schedule is COMPLETELY loaded with other projects. I said" Too easy!". I will use some of his original pictures as well as refering you to the previous review. There were some interesting things brought up by Gary which need to be re iterated. Ok, on with the show...

The kit still comes with 13 parts cast in resin in Mike Stelzel's normal high quality. Mike's figures rarely, if ever, come with airbubbles or serious mold shifts. While this is to be expected (to some degree) as long as the modeler can reasonbly fix anything then there really isn't a problem. This kit is certianly no exception. I thought I found most of the TINY airbubbles but alas, you'll see in my pictures that I discovered a few that I missed. No worries...it's an easy fix. One of the things that I noticed right away (especially for those of us who don't have an extensive library on the F&IW) was that Mike is taking a lot of the guess work out of it by listing several different color combinations right on the instruction sheet (again, normal for Michael Roberts Ltd. products). Of course, I will get some books as this is what makes this hobby fun for me. I get to learn a little more about history! ;) Here are Guy's pictures:

The first figure (starting from the bottom and working my way up) comes with two optional heads.

This is the figure sliding down the embankment. Note: as to the cartridge box, Mike states in his instructions "To depict a Frenchman, remove the insignia on the cartridge box of the seated figure" Not, I know this isn't a "know all, do all answer to Gary's post on Guy's previous review, but it does help. If you still want to include a 2 or 3 on the cartridge box, I guess you could simply paint it there or, shave it all off and paint the entire insignia there. Your Choice! Here is the figure sliding down the embankment:

Ok, the second figure, looks like an Indian to me. Maybe he's not...I don't know. For arguments sake, we'll call him Figure #2 until I'm told something different. Alan, feel free to jump in here... Figure #2 is standing at the top of the embankment making his way down. There are plenty of painting options available for this one too...just read what Mike tells you in the instructions again ;) Here is Figure #2:

Finally, here's a shot of the completed (and IMPRESSIVE) vignette:

Mike also lists several references:

The Art of Robert Griffing
East/West Visions

American Woodland Indians
Osprey MAA #228

Indian Clothing of the Great Lakes 1740-1840
Eagles View Publishing Co.

Tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy
Osprey MAA #395

Here are two more shots of the vignette on a base I bought from Greg Stewart.

Overall, this vignette gets (y) (y) . I'd get this as soon as you see it. It has a lot of potential as far as color options go. You can also go crazy with Mike's base he sculpted for this (it's a gem in itself). All of this coupled with Alan Ball's flair for Early American subjects added to Mike's reputation for quality products and you can't go wrong. This is one that I'm sure we'll see on the contest tables in the coming years and certianly, it'll end up on the collectors shelves.

What are you waiting for? Contact Mike Stelzel and get yours today!

**Update** (PLEASE READ!)
Mike contacted me with two very important details.

1- The Scouts will be available soon! This sample was for the intent of doing a review. Mike has not started shipping these yet. Soon! There were a few unforseen problems which caused a SMALL delay. Be patient please!

2- When you order The Scouts, a small sample of snow and leaves will come with the vignette to finish off the groundwork. Got to Mike's website to see a sample of what he sells. This is an added bonus I wasn't aware of this but it only serves to "sweeten" the deal. Now what are you waiting for?

Excellent Jim. You have done the figures much better justice with your photos than I did and I'm happy you agreed to do another review. The vignette of Mike's warranted it. Greg Stewart's base really compliments the whole scene.
