For my fellow Great War nuts - if you haven't bought this book, I highly recommend it. Most of the WWI illustrated books are collections of newspaper period photos - good, but mostly staged and probably a lot of them you've seen somewhere else, right? Dr. Laffin took a different route. The about 120 illustrations are from the mostly forgotten artists who sold their work to the numerous illustrated newspapers. Some of the artists include R. Caton Woodville, Georges Scott, J. Simont, S. Begg, & Harry Payne. Highly realistic, highly detailed and there is a potential diorama in about half of them!

ISBN: 0-7509-1438-6, Sutton publishing, 1991 with several reprints. Original list 12.99 sterling. The one I bought had a list sticker of $18.00.

Yes Dan, I come under that heading WW1 nut and can also recommend John Laffin's book... I seem to get more from illustrative styles than than photos.

Have a bound copy of the Illustrated London Times, be it alittle worse for ware, from 1915-16 full of etchings mostly Canadian, French and highland reg's.... also a few Indian all on the western front,.. some fool had put it out in the rubbish collection, I keep an eye on his rubbish all the time now....he! he!...

Hi

I'm a newbie here, and wanted to say Hi.

I've been modelling for more years than I wish to note...............I'm a fellow WW1 nut and must say that I have several of Mr Laffin's books, and none have been disapointing.

It's great visiting the site to see the work all you guys post, it's very inspirational, and has gotten me to dust off some old projects.

I going to start using oils, as my major medium, I think I have at least a basic pallett on hand, but any suggestions on necessary colors would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The more I look at this book, the more I find! The illustration of the Brit with the umbrella sitting on a fire step reading - :) ! The one of the two French soldiers - the old 'hairy one' and the newbie with peachfuzz on his cheek and the experienced soldier is training him - marvellous stuff!

All the best,
Dan
