Hi Roc

I showed two of my works (woodland indians and pairie indians forum painting) and because I am a newbie here, I asked for comments and tips.

Nearly 150 views, but only two comments. One from you with a kind of welcome and a comment from another newbie.

I think, that you will not bite. But comments (critical or not) from you and the other guys would be more helpfull for me.

And by the way, how could I open a workbench for figures in work? Are the workbench only when I sculp a figure or when I "only" paint figures?

Thanks

Ulrich

Hello Ulrich,
It seems to be the nature of all forums that there are many "views" and very few comments made. Even for some of the more well known painters / sculpters here on the forum you will find they have far more views that they have comments. I have found that by commenting on other's works.......you will recieve more comments on your own works. So be paitent and the comments will come.

As far as a vbench..........the vbench is for any of your projects whether they be painting...sculpting........or just a thread on your previous figures you have done. It keeps all of your work in the same forum and not get lost in the archieves of the main painting / sculpting forums.

send me your complete name along with your sign in name to: [email protected] if you would like a vbench set up for you.

Hope this helps
Guy

Personnaly, I like the Workbench concept. I think it's a very great idea and allows painters or sculpters to better share their work and receive comments.

Are there some rules to get one ? And some rules of utilisation (eg. regular actualization) ?

If members would like a vbench they have only to request one to myself or Gordy.

As far as rules you can check the forum rules for general forum use. We would like to see members post their work as often as possible. You will notice some members are more regular than others due to many factors ( time allowed to the hobby.....access to a digital camera......some members work faster than others......and on and on )

The main thing is to submit your complete name along with your sign-in name to either of us. It can sometimes take several days to set one up and we notify you by email when it is ready.

Hi guys,

Forums like this ones opens a lot of perspectives for beginners like us (me included), but there's another side of the medallion. There are so many viewers and so little persons that actually help you...
The level of help is also something like that...

For example: Jaume posts one of his figures and I reply with: Superb! Keep up the good work.
A little while later I come into a post of a beginner (like me) and I also right down: Superb! Keep up the good work.
Those are samples that I can refine here in the V-Bench.
For Jaume, he knows that his work is Superb and a worldclass, but for us are those words just to keep the good spirit. I know it's not for everyone I speak now, but I rather hear, you could do like that, that that way and that part of the pants just doensn't look like how it supose to be. That helps me forward and let me pay attention to it. The keep up the good work just let me think: 'Hell, I'm working good' while my work doesn't come close in that of Jaume... If you know what I mean?
This is not a critism on this forum or a personal attack to someone, but just my own experience. But I have the luck to have a grand-master like Gino Poppe who live's a couple of kms from my home, so he can help me ahead in real life.
I can also say that I've been helped a lot over here... and that's why I keep coming over here, posting my work, etc etc...
Planet Figure is doing a hell of a good Job!! And I think you can see the progress that I've made over here.

Cheers!
Wesley

So true Wesley............I have seen a vast improvement in your work since you first joined. Thanks for your support.

To all the new members,

I've been painting for almost tree years now. I've been learning so much here, from the comments (most at the time it was always good work, keep going etc) good or bad they keep me going.
I'am very sure, that Guy, Rocco, or Anders to name some didn't respont with good comments i think i quit figure painting.
It is so important when you are starting not hearing, that is wrong, you have to change that etc.
I think that the comments (specially at the beginning) must not be superb, masterpaint etc, but good and for the next figure you must try......I hope i made my self clear.
But that is my opinion.
Second: Become a member off a figureclub. I cannot say enough that when you see master paint you can ask, look, ask, ask etc.
The more you ask (also here on the forum) you get always an answer and that is how you learn.
If i look at my first figure and my two last i must say (and i say it not along) that i made my step forward.
Just my two cents.

Marc

Thanks Guy,

but i must commit, i've painting almost every evening two hours. Maybe there is some piece of the steps forward.
Because the more you paint, the better you painting.
Experience counts.

Marc

Ulrich, Sorry if I may have missed commenting on your work. I try to scroll through the vBenches to look at what everyone is doing. Don't feel offended if you have just gotten views on your work and not replies. I feel as if some folks do not feel like they have anything to offer. There are no "qualifications" to have an opinion on what someone has painted or sculpted. One opinion is just as valuable as the next. I wish there were a way to stir up more participation in terms of posting comments, but some people are comfortable enough just lurking, and that's okay too.~Gary

Dear Ulrich, yes it can be a bit frustrating if nobody bothers answering you if you post stuff. It makes you wonder "Why do I bother?" Thing is, if I don't feel I have anything constructive to add, then I don't add stuff for it's own sake, maybe others feel the same. Keep your stuff coming anyway mate ;)
best wishes

First I was a little bit frustated. But Know :).

@Marc I hope you know Konrad Schulte (member of the vbench) and his flats. He try to learn me how to paint a figure. And when he compares my old ones with my new ones, he said that he is hopefull, that, perhaps some day, I can paint a figure without cleaning it a lot of times. ;)

For all: Thanks a lot

Ulrich

Roc,

I for one was somewhat reluctant to share my work, because of the high standard I find at this forum (and off course the fact that I haven't completed a full sculpt or paint job yet :) ).

But I made a resolution to start participating more and as soon as I get my hobby room set up (after renovating and moving to a new house) I will make good on that promise. So be prepared for some 120mm sci-fi sculpts later this year!

- Marvin -

P.S. I still don't know if sci-fi is acceptable in these fora. It doesn't have to be historical to fit in here right?

Sci-Fi is very acceptable and I wish we would see more Sci-fi posted here. We would love to see your work in Sci-fi.

Guy

Marvin, ocasionally, I also enjoy painting Sci-Fi figures,I like the 25mm Sci-Fi.
I'm looking forward to seeing some of your work.

They are definitely acceptable.

Cheers
Roc. :)

Ulrich,

It is great that you know Konrad. I've meet him two time's and it is a great and friendly guy.
When Konrad said that it is hopefull, you can assure that you are on the right track. Konrad can paint, for me he is a grand master, specialy in flat.
So, if someone could learn you, he is the man.
And, do what he said, and when you are painting a figure every month, you see, when you get better and better that you going to slow down. You'r skills improve, so you get more critical to your work. That's what is happen to me.
The only advice from me is, learn from Konrad in practice, ask as much as you can to Konrad, here on the planet, and visit shows. ASK, ASK, ASK.
Read history, look for paintings, etc.
Swallow as much as you can from the figure that you are painting. Look what others did, ask how they did.

Then, you see improve of your work, and i hope that you ask for comments and critism also here, maybe it is little, but everything helps.

Marc

First off, I love this site and I wouldn't change much. But I'm not a big fan of the vbench concept. I find it hard to navigate. Also (this will sound strange), I find it somewhat intimidating to have my own vbench since I'm such a newbie. I'd much rather have a general workbench where people submitted their work. I'm sure there are benefits to the vbench concept that I'm not considering.

Don't be intimidated, rather take it as a challenge and a willingness to improve.
We all felt the same way you feel when we first started.

Cheers
Roc. :)
