I've just noticed the following statement on their website;

"Tradition of London Shop

It is with great regret, after 60 years of trading in London, that from 31 December 2012 the shop at 5a Shepherd Street, Mayfair, London, will close, due to circumstances beyond our control.

However, customers may rest assured that Tradition of London will continue to trade and manufacture products in England as well as providing the same worldwide mail order service from Traddition of London or through our agents.

If you have any queries please contact: [email protected]

Kind regards

Magnus Lindstrom"

It's a few years since I bought anything from them and a great deal longer since I was last in their shop but I can't help feeling a little saddened by the closure of the shop.

Hi Geoff, I think your last comment says it all "It's a few years since I bought anything from them and a great deal longer since I was last in their shop" in spite of many years in the hobby I have never been in the shop! Why run a shop especially with the rates in Mayfair when it can all be done on the net? I think I have been into a
shopping centre twice in the past 18 months-everything is on line now. Can't say I blame them but times are changing.

Hi Keith, it's pretty much the same with us. I'm fortunate my wife hates shopping & almost everything we buy is online so the high street has a pretty miserable time from us. I think it was more a symbolic thing as Steve says, "end of an era".

You are right Geoff, it is a shame-I don't think there is a figure shop left in the UK, I think this is the last to go. Local councils would rather have empty shops than reduce rates for small business owners who could add just the variety needed in the high street-It doesn't matter which part of the UK you go to the shops in the malls are all the same and as they develop their internet sales so the malls will empty too.

Sad - I recall my periodic vacation trips from here in Canada to London as a teen and memorable visits to John Tunstill's Soldiers near the IWM, Under Two Flags and Seagull. I only hit tradition once as their Stadden figs were a little too toyish for me but sad to see that all of these great shops are gone now. Nothing like a visit to a well presented figure shop to hook a newbie.

Are there any good figure shops in manland Europe or is this closing shutters thing happening everywhere? I only ask because the figure "centre of the uinverse" seems to have moved from the US and UK (70's - 80's) to Europe (including Russia) today. That's going by manufacturers, major shows and magazines.

Hi Colin, .........the UK is closed for business now shop wise with Historex, SK Miniatures and El Greco the main on-line traders selling multiple brands and attending shows.

There seems to be some shops still in Germany? No doubt some of our EU and beyond colleagues will be able to clarify,

Not quite Keith we do have this http://www.lifesize-models.co.uk/ ! In all seriousness I think you are right I don't think there is a single shop left in the UK that retails any actual figures that you can actually go into and look at them :(
