Greeting Planeteers,

I've decided to give painting acrylics with Vallejo a bash. Due to supply issues of the product in SA I'm being forced to by them from the UK, so if you all will indulge me with a moment of your time and your much valued advice... ;)

My questions (bearing in mind that these will mostly be used for medieval figures for the moment):

What colours do you find absolutely essential?

What are your favourite mixes (BC, Highlight, shadow,etc) for painting:
White;
Black;
Red;
Blue;
Yellow?

Thanks for your time,

Rudi :)

Hi Rudi, this question is really a "How long is a piece of string?" kind of thing - one person's must-have paint could easily not even be in another's palette. A lot will also depend on how much mixing you like to do too; although hobby ranges are typically designed to minimise the need to mix colours, and some people do this as little as possible as a result, excluding metallics you could paint most any subject quite well with only four or five tubes of paint if you had to.

If you want to keep the number of paints down to a reasonable amount here's a suggested palette:
White 951
Black 950
Deep Yellow 915
Vermillion 909
Magenta 945
Dark Prussian Blue 899
Blue 925
Yellow Ochre 913
Burnt Umber 941

Someone on CMON found out the pigments in some of their range by asking so based on what they were told these are the equivalent of:
Titanium White
Don't know which black but it doesn't make a huge difference
Cadmium Yellow
Cadmium Red
Quinacridone Magenta
Phthalo Blue
French Ultramarine
Mars Yellow or Yellow Ochre
Burnt Umber

Hi Rudi,

I would also inlcude some flesh tones. I mostly use Brown Cork 843 (looks really dark on the colour chart, but is not that much) for the base, and Light Flesh 928 for highlighting.

Deck tan 896 and Ivory 918 are specilly helpful when painting white. You use the former for the base and the later for the highlights.

Probably not need to say, but you can find the chart at...

Also, you can see some more information about mixes at Colorado Miniatures webpage.

Cheers.
