Been a long time since I've been here but good to be back. :) Hve a question re Vallejo Model Colors. Have been using them more and more and they are great to work with but am having a problem. when I apply my base coats (usually 2, thinned 2:1 with distilled water) they dry shinny in some areas ... rathy blotchy. same goes for my shadows and hightlights. :( I am stirring them well. Any suggestions as to what the problem is and how I can get around it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Back Ken

Vallejo acrylics are naturally slighly satin, I suffered with the very same problem and asked the very same question only a couple of weeks ago. I found the only solution was to matt clear coat the finished painted areas, if you take a look in the painting forum under ”Matt Problem, Finding a clear coat” there is pleanty of solutions to this problem but not just clear coats but matt mediums and other paint types. I hope this can help cure your problem... :)

Hi Ken ! Try adding a bit of Tamiya Flat Base (X-21) to the paint mix. It works like a charm for getting rid of those shiny spots ! HTH. Cheers !
Kenneth.

Thanks everbody for answering. I think mixing something into the paint is the way to go. Will give Tamiya and some old Polly Scale a shot. Never hurts to experiment a bit. Thanks Again.

the flatness of Vallejo varies between colors. Some are dead flat and others are satin while some have just the slightest hint of satin to them.

Another alternative is to add a touch of Andrea paint to them which will usually flatten them out since Andreas are often too flat (for me anyway). That way you can take advantage of the wider assortment of Vallejos, but deaden them by mixing in a few select colors from Andrea. This is especially helpful with blues.

Another thought - why use Vallejos if they don't do what you want? I've been using the JoSonia products line for a while. They're cheaper and dry dead flat. I'm sure there are other brands that would be less trouble. A friend just bragged to me that he did his last Viking's cape with Dutch Boy house paint!!

I admit I don't especially like Vallejo paints as they don't dry matt enough. There are outlets over here for Jo Sonja paints, mainly craft suppliers. I have tried a few and they do matt off very well.

For acrylics I use Andrea Color, and just occasionally CromaColor. Some of the "el-cheapo" DIY matts are very good, but the ranges are very limited.

Hi there-
I'm a new member, and have only been using Vallejo for about a year. What I've found easiest is to turn the bottle upside down for a short bit and squeeze out the thick paint and thin it with water. I haven't had a problem since doing this.
BTW I love this site and really like the work I've seen on it. You guys are an inspiration! :)

Hi Bob

Welcome to the planet, I agree with you there is some absolutely superb figures (painted and sculpted) on this site, and you will not find a friendlier bunch of like minded people anywhere else.

I have not come across the solidified paint at the bottom of the bottle solution, I try to mix that in all together before starting with a particular colour. I had been suffering with the vellajo (satin) colours, with most of them, what I found to be best was to not handle the figure to much when painting and to dull coat after finishing. And when adding a matting agent to the paint it would change the colour slighly, not much, but enough to throw my mixing off, but at the end of the day its each to his own, and what ever works best for you .... happy painting
