I hope this is the correct sub-forum for this inquiry…

I am wondering how the vBench area works. Is the function of it that I create a thread and post in-progress photos solely in that thread? Are the images to be stored offsite somewhere? If the project takes me several months (most likely), do I continue adding updates to the thread I have created?

I have not painted in several years now, and previously had completed only a few figures. I now have more time, and I want to pursue the hobby more seriously. With the help of a generous Pf member, I have been able to obtain the full run of HM magazines (excepting the PDF issues), and I have read each cover to cover over the past few months. I feel I am ready for my first serious project, and I would like serious constructive criticism along the way (which leads to my second question).

Since there is a section for brutal honesty, should I create a working-thread there instead? Or, will I get the same, critical feedback in the vBench area by asking for it?

Thanks for your comments.

You can post in both sections of the forum and ask for critique.

I post in the vBench section because all your own work can be grouped together easily on the vBench tab, which I like for my own reference on when I finished what, etc. Its like a virtual display cabinet.

Good luck with your new start!

Vbench posts are stored on the vBench tab of your profile page. To my mind they are for your works in progress, painting, sculpting, dioramas etc. You can start a thread at the beginning of a project and add pics as the project progresses to its' completion. This allows other members to offer insight, encouragement or critiques as you go or you can ask for advice when you might be stuck. I've found it a great tool for my own improvement and learned from other's posts that show how they work through a project.
The brutal honesty section, I believe, is more for, as the name implies, brutally honest critique. I would think when you post a finished work here you are saying "Here's what I've done... Don't hold back, what do you think?" To post here you must be prepared to have your worked picked at with a fine toothed comb.

For me the vBench is a great learning tool with the added benifit that it also acts as an album of your work that makes it easy for you (and anyone who wishes to see) to access at a glance.

That's my two cents worth, enjoy the site and I look forward to seeing your work.

Colin
