Hi Ritchie:
I have painted this figure as well, quite some time ago. And I feel it is one
of the better 120mm Verlinden figures. The second group of photos you
posted show a great deal of improvement. Not all figure modelers do what I
am suggesting here. But I paint in the shadow and highlight detail. And by
that I mean, between the legs under the crotch, I paint that darker than the
area on top of the shoulders where the Sun at high noon would fall upon. And
the same for under the arms in the arm pits. I paint that area darker; same
for under the chin, under the nose, in the eye sockets, etc.
I remember the problem with the eye sockets. They were a V shaped
horizontal groove. For me that really caused a problem trying to paint the
iris in the eyes. And I think your eyes have somewhat the "deer in the head-
lights" problem. How I finally fixed the eyes problem, was to put Aves
Apoxysculpt putty in the openings of the eyes. That way, when the putty
was cured, and after I sanded the eye openings, I had a semi-flat surface
to paint two circular irises up under the upper eyelid. I hope this long
diatribe is of some value to you.
Since that figure, when ever I have a figure that has holes where the black
dot would be in the center of the Iris, or deep cut circles for the outline of
the Iris, I use putty to smooth all that over. I find it is easier for me at
least, to paint a pair of eyes on a smooth surface. Hopefully, at some point
all the sculptors will have the eye opening be smooth. Here on PF most of
the sculptors are doing this.
Good luck, and most important have fun, and enjoy the journey,
Jayhawker
