I normally pin the feet to a temporary base when painting. For mounted figures I glue the horse to the base provided and paint from there. I realize that the latter makes it harder to reach parts of the horse. Because of this I have decided to invest in a vice of some sort. Can any one recommend any products they use? I would like a work horse product that I can use for all my figure needs. If not then a couple of different sizes for mounted and standing models. I hope to start dabbling in the 90mm mounted game soon as well so I would needs something really sturdy. :cautious:

Thanks housecarl. I always consider the homemade option first. However I'm the type that is willing to pay a premium for something that makes my work easier :hungry:. Anyone think there is a specific product out there that can do a better job?

Thanks yellowcat. I looked at the Sphere Products vices but seeing how its made of MDF I really wonder if it will just topple over when painting say a 90mm mounted fig. The other one looks similar to what the Panavise I've seen for sale. Anyone use that one?

I have this and it works great for larger figures, especially metal. I tilt the vise on an angle and use the edge to rest my wrist on to steady my brush.

I have the same one and I also make a similar one myself.

I've been meaning to build one myself, because it appeals to my DIY senses. But realistically, when I look at my stash, and the pile of started-but-unfinished things on my bench, I think I should probably spring for one like the one above, or one of the handles that Micro-Mark carries.

Prost!

Hi Kevin

our vices shouldn't fall over with a 90mm mounted figure in and we do supply the shorter pillars now.'The horse in the picture is 90mm resin to give you an idea of the size.

I use a jeweler's universal clamp. You can find them for about $15 on amazon. I just close it around the pins in the figure's legs. The handle screws off so you can set it down too. You can also use the little rods/pins that come with it to hold odd shaped objects (shields, banners, etc) while painting. This works well for figures on foot, 54mm-90mm. However for horses it is a bit too small. It's a nice tool to have around, though if your interest is 90mm mounted then you'll need a bigger solution.
