VP 2002 Peiper bust in GW acryics

hi everyone!

aquired the old verlinden bust of Joachim Peiper in 200mm

its a cracker! as i have been working on a large scale bike and getting a bit frustrated about no figure modeling i decided to plow on with this piece.

there were a few air holes in the casting but filled easily and got it undercoated

i was planning on trying the more " angular " style of painting that i've seen here and elsewhere on box arts etc........ did'nt work

i seem to soften facial details as i work..... mebe next one

used some serious under painting for the eye sockets and especially beard shadow...

used ground conte pastels in distilled water for the beard and brows.. needs a second lighter color run over it

ADVICE PLEASE?

the jacket??? color? fabric? and is the collar rabbit?i can't seem to find any reference for it

and the piping on the hat.... could be pink? but i understand its an odd pattern and may have been in white/silver?

Hi Mark,

looks very good already! I like the resemblance of the sculpt as well.
From the fur collar I'd guess the jacket is leather and the fur maybe sheep, it looks tan on photos, try a net search, there are few photos of him.

I can't speak for those specific colours but those skins tones are perfect, very lifelike.

Very fine start ! especially like the beard. Many of these old Verlinden busts were gems, as good as anything done today IMO, and it`s nice to see a fine painter begin one.

The color of the SS hat piping, as well as the edging of the cloth shoulder straps under the silver corded braid were originally keyed to the branch of service, Panzers pink, Pz. Gren. White, Art. Red, Pz. Recon Green, etc, but were then changed to White/silver for all in I think `42. The wide black hat band was always a matt black velvet for officers.

Of course many of the veterans kept the old piping colors throughout the war.

struggling with the leather jacket, another 2 or 3 hours should see it somewhere close

VP busts are great , love the stubble , very impressive and your flesh tones look great , he looks tired and thinking , like what you are doing on the leather coat ( black ...arghhhh ..let us know how you did this ) , looking at my references the pink piping lookes a little too light perhaps , but it might be the pics ( but I am no expert on piccy taking )

Hi Mark,

This is a great bust and yo're doing a great job with it.

Just one suggestion. When painting a large area of black polished leather remember that it will have a natural sheen to it, which means you don't need to paint the highlights quite so high. The sheen of the black leather will create natural highlights which you don't need to accentuate by painting a grey/black highlight colour.

Hi Nap!

for the leather i based with black, highlighted with codex grey heavily thinned and built that up. went over the shadows with layers af black and then re highlighted.

that got me to the previous step

Hi Tony and thanks for the input... i have ended up using several glazes of the black to finish the leather and it seems to have pulled it all together. my only dilema now is do i matt it down and let the painting do the talking or leave it slightly satin and use the effect?????? Argh!

so it's almost done. i'm mostly happy with it and i don't like to overwork pieces and i enjoy the feeling of actually finishing them

so here's my penultimate post, next time i put a pic up the bust will be properly based and ready for the cabinet

Thanks for details , great leather , love the collar , is this bust totally done in GW acrylics or basecoated in them ( I might have missed this ..its early !!) , tempted to get this one ..if I can get it past the guard on the door !!!! ..and find space !!!!

If you want to giver matt/satin lacquer a try, do it only partionally (only shadows), but would definiately leave the highlights out.

it is undercoated with grey automotive primer, everything else is GW paint
