All this time off has given me some time to complete several projects. Below is an Andrea Horse (minus stirrups and reins ) 54mm awaiting the Mountain Man (drying) and I have started installing grass plugs . I started this project months ago and being off this week has given me the chance to almost complete him. I also was able to flesh out 3 other figures and they are in the oven getting a quick dry to the oils. More to come later. Any suggestions, comments welcome.

This is the other side showing the brass rod I left in the groundwork to keep the peg hole open durring the groundwork stage.

Thanks Leigh,
I just took the Mountain Man and the Loin Cloths out of the oven and tomorrow I will finish him up I hope. He is an Andrea 54mm Mountain Man. I will also do some accessories that will attach to the horse and saddle.

Leigh, Here is one of the small trees getting it's leaves. I will put enough leaves to represent fall with the bulk of the leaves on the ground as though they had already fallen.

Another masterpiece in the making I see Guy!
I keep thinking I'd like to have a go at a horse! I've wanted to do one since I was first into modelling the first time round, with all the articles that regularly appeared in Military Modelling at the time, but they were always done in oils & I didn't have them then!
The mountain man's clothing really looks like soft leather (which I assume it would have been?)

Something I was thinking about last night that you (or somebody else) might be able to answer for me is: Do you know of any manufacturer that produces a native American wearing a U.S. cavalry officer's jacket? (as seen in almost every "Western" film produced! - including, I think, Dances with wolves? or maybe it was last of the Mohicans!?)Just was reminded of this when I went to Andrea's site to see if I could see how much that mountain man would cost me! the "Crow Scout" that is directly below it seems to be wearing a jacket, but I was thinking more of one with what my old Dad used to call "scrambled egg" (old British navy term for braiding!)

Good Mornin Simon,

I don't know about the masterpiece but thank you. I was intimidated about doing a horse for years and finally decided to try one. I picked one with a saddle and girth as it was sectioned off and I wouldn't have to do my first one all at one time. Using bottled oils / enamels, I can paint one part today and the other part tomorrow. Works fine.

As far as the Indian with the Army Jacket with gold braid, I found this bust and wondered if it was what you were looking for.

Guy (y)

Yeah that's the sort of thing........now if I could just find a full 90mm or smaller figure........................Aww! who am I kidding, try as I might to resist it, there's gonna come a day when I have to do a bust!!

Post more pics when you finish this one
BTW what are you using for the grass tufts? paintbrush hairs?

Cheers (as always )
Simon

A company called Woodland Scenics produces the grass in different colors and can be found at most Model Railroad shops. If not, let me know.

I always forget about the railway modellers shops! There's one only a ten minute walk from my house but I only ever go in there for tools or paints!! I'll have to spend a bit more time looking around next time!

You all prepared?

Simon

After my son goes to bed, It'll be folding programmes.

Other than that, ready as we'll ever be!

Guy, Your mountain man is coming along, I really like that you've added a horse, something not seen much with Mountain men figures. In regards to another piece you did, what colors(s) did you use for the Verlinden pirate's shirt? Yellow is a tough one to shade, and the subtle transition from shadow to highlight seems to have worked out well.~Gary

Thanks Gary,
Actually the pirates vest / shirt is brown. Because of the skin tones being so dark, I had to lighten the photo so one could see the flesh tones thus making the shirt look yellow and almost obblberating the head bandana's stippling. If you'll wait a sec....I'll shoot a quick photo of the shirt and explain the subtle blending from dark to light.
Guy

gary, this will hopefully show the truer colors of the Pirate's vest and bandana.

The blending of colors subtley is done by lightly drybrushing with the lightest blending color added with a drop or two of white.

guy

now the front view of the truer colors and you can see that alot of the facial detail is too dark because of the negro skin.

Guy

Guy, Sorry. I like the color, and it's how I would even do yellow for 17/18th century subjects, not too bright or dull. Thanks for taking the time to post the pics. Your participation on this site is to be noted, your contributions to the various threads, no to mention your encouragement is appreciated. This site is great and the participation is always (as far as I know) Cordial and on the topic at hand, other site should take note. Thanks again.~Gary
