Hi guys
I'm after some advice please.
I'm currently working on a bust Verlindens Officer of the Chasseurs à Cheval de la Garde which require quite a bit of gold lace.

The problem I've struck is I'm not getting a decent coverage. It doesn't appear to be adhering very well to the oil that is being overpainted.

The gold I'm using is Humbrol mixed with a small amounts of either black /Burnt Sienna/Indian red oil to act a an initial shadow that I progressively lighten.

Do I need to undercoat the metal areas first?
Is there a trick to working with metallic paint?

Thanks

Chris

hi Chris, mixing enamel's and oil's does not work, that is why you are not getting good coverage.humbrol gold is a difficult colour to use at the best of times, but if you want to lighten/darken it use enamel paints with it, an acrylic base coat of brown or light brown, desert sand is usually a good idea

basecoat of red acrylics or oils then printers inks shaded with oils
never overcoat oils or inks mixed with oils with acrylics

On my last bust (Emmanuel de Grouchy) i paint the laces this way.
Undercoat with W&N old gold with burnt umber.
Highlighting with old gold and shading with burnt umber.
After totally dry I picked up the goldpaint from the bottom of Humbrol gold.
Then with W&N Liquin and the paint from under of the can I painted up the highest highlight.
